Liverpool Just Joined the Summerville Sweepstakes. West Ham’s Recession Prices Are Real.

West Ham’s summer fire sale is picking up steam. Mateus Fernandes already went to Tottenham for £85 million. Now the vultures are circling for Crysencio Summerville, and a new heavyweight just entered the ring.

Liverpool has reportedly joined the race for the Dutch winger, according to Caught Offside. The Reds just hired Andoni Iraola as head coach, and they need attacking help. They were initially linked with Yan Diomande but that deal appears to be fading. Diomande’s preference is reportedly Paris Saint-Germain. So Liverpool pivoted to Summerville, who put up five goals and two assists in 31 Premier League appearances last season.

That doesn’t sound like a lot. But context matters. West Ham got relegated. Summerville was playing for a team that was sinking most of the year. Five goals on a bad team still shows something.

Manchester United’s Interest Comes With a Catch

United was the first big club linked with Summerville right after West Ham went down. Journalist Ben Jacobs reported earlier this month that the two clubs have made contact. Talks are still exploratory, which is a fancy way of saying nothing is close yet.

Here’s the thing about United: any move for Summerville apparently depends on Marcus Rashford leaving. Rashford just finished a loan at Barcelona. If he stays, there’s no room for Summerville. If he goes, United needs a winger and Summerville is the guy. So this whole thing is basically on hold until Rashford decides his future.

The Release Clause Dropped by £30 Million

This is the juiciest part of the story. Teamtalk reported that Summerville’s release clause was originally £70 million when he signed from Leeds two years ago. But West Ham’s relegation triggered a reduction. The clause is now £40 million.

That’s a massive discount. And it makes sense. Championship clubs can’t command Premier League prices. But here’s the catch: most teams won’t want to pay that full £40 million in one lump sum, which is what you have to do to trigger a release clause. So the actual transfer fee could end up higher if clubs structure it as a normal deal with installments. Counterintuitive, but that’s how it works sometimes.

Chelsea Wants a Swap Deal

According to journalist Simon Phillips, Chelsea has reached out to West Ham about a swap deal. The Blues are looking for a replacement for Alejandro Garnacho, though it’s not clear why they think Garnacho needs replacing. But Chelsea does this. They hoard wingers and then trade them for other wingers.

The problem is nobody knows what Chelsea would offer as the makeweight. Could be a young prospect. Could be a guy they overpaid for two years ago. West Ham will listen because they’re in the Championship now and need to rebuild. But they also know Summerville is their most saleable asset.

Summerville has options. Liverpool. United. Chelsea. Maybe others. He’s 24, Dutch, and has Premier League experience. The question is where he wants to go. And that’s probably the only thing holding up this whole saga right now.
