Tim Ream, at 38, Faces Likely World Cup Exit After USMNT Falls 4-1 to Belgium

The U.S. got a boost before kickoff when FIFA cleared Folarin Balogun to play in the World Cup Round of 16. But against Belgium, the world’s No. 8 team, it didn’t matter much. The final score was 4-1, and the dream of bringing the trophy home ended for millions of fans who packed bars, living rooms, and stadiums across the country.

Getting knocked out when you’re four wins from glory is brutal. For captain Tim Ream, who turns 39 next year, it’s especially heavy. He’s been the voice in the locker room, the steady hand at the back. And this almost certainly was his last World Cup. He knows it. The team knows it. The fans who’ve followed his whole career know it too.

Ream’s message after the loss

Even in defeat, Ream didn’t hide. He stood in front of a FOX Sports microphone with Tom Rinaldi and let it out straight.

“Just a big thank you. We felt it. We saw it. We embraced it. We enjoyed it. We loved every minute of it. It’s the end of this tournament but it’s not the end for this team,” Ream said. “Those guys in there deserve every adulation and minute of enjoyment that has been these last weeks. It’s a special feeling.”

He kept going, unprompted. “And like I said, we felt every minute of it. Long may it continue because it’s an unbelievable group of players and characters and individuals and people in there, not just on the field, but off the field.”

It was raw and real. And honestly, it got to a lot of people watching at home.

What comes next for the USMNT

The loss stings, but there’s a younger core here. Guys like Balogun, Gio Reyna, and Christian Pulisic will likely be around for 2030. But the leadership void left by Ream won’t be easy to fill. He wasn’t just a defender. He was the guy who kept everyone calm when things got chaotic. And against Belgium, things got chaotic fast.

Belgium scored twice in the first half. The U.S. pulled one back early in the second, but then the floodgates opened. Two more goals in the final 20 minutes sealed it. The crowd went quiet. But when the final whistle blew, the supporters didn’t leave. They stayed and sang, just for a few minutes. Ream noticed.

“We felt every minute of it,” he had said. And you believed him.
