The Commanders WR Room Is a Mess. And Brandon Aiyuk Might Make It Worse.

The Commanders WR Room Is a Mess. And Brandon Aiyuk Might Make It Worse.

Brandon Aiyuk wants out of San Francisco. He’s been loud about it. And for a while, it looked like Washington might be his landing spot. But here’s the thing nobody wants to say out loud: the Commanders have a wide receiver problem that Aiyuk probably can’t fix. And if they chase him, they might miss out on the one guy who actually could.

Let’s be real about Aiyuk first. He had a monster 2023 season. 1,342 yards. Seven touchdowns. He looked like a true number one. Then 2024 happened. Seven games. Zero touchdowns. A knee injury that ended his season early. At 28, he’s not old, but he’s also not young. And he hasn’t played a full game since October 2023. That’s almost two years of rust. The Commanders would be asking him to learn a new offense, prove he’s healthy, and immediately produce as a WR2. That’s a lot of faith in a guy who just spent the last year making headlines for the wrong reasons.

And the headlines keep coming. Aiyuk recently took a shot at Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels online. According to a post from Ari Meirov on X, Aiyuk said, “You’re on my team now. You have to follow my rules. You’re gonna have to stop running behind your momma, and I might believe what you’re talking about.” That’s a weird look for a guy who hasn’t even signed a contract yet. You’re calling out your future QB before you’re officially in the building. It’s not a great sign for locker room chemistry.

So what’s the alternative? Stefon Diggs. He’s 32 and coming off a torn ACL, but he’s also posted seven 1,000-yard seasons in the last eight. The one he missed was 2024, when he was on pace for 1,000 before the injury. Diggs has a longer track record of consistency. But the longer Washington waits on Aiyuk, the more likely Diggs signs elsewhere. That’s the math they’re stuck with.

Without Aiyuk, the Commanders have a bigger issue

The receiver room right now is Terry McLaurin, who turns 30 this season. Antonio Williams, a rookie who hasn’t played a snap. And a bunch of guys who don’t scare anyone. ESPN’s Mike Clay ranked the Commanders roster 21st in the NFL and called cornerback their biggest weakness. But that’s not right. Trey Amos, Mike Sainristil, and Amik Robertson could be average. There’s hope there. The receiver room has no such hope.

If the Commanders don’t add a real threat, Jayden Daniels is going to have to do everything himself. And that means running. And scrambling. And taking hits he shouldn’t have to take. The front office is betting the 2026 season on a thin receiver group and hoping a free agent saves them. But there’s no lottery ticket left. Aiyuk or not, the Commanders are staring at a problem they can’t scheme around.
