Seattle Turned Into a Red, White and Blue Party Before USMNT’s Belgium Rematch

The streets around Seattle Stadium look like someone spilled a giant can of patriotic paint. Fans packed the blocks hours before kickoff, turning the city into a walking American flag ahead of the USMNT’s Round of 16 matchup against Belgium.

This isn’t just any knockout game. It’s a rematch from the 2014 World Cup, when Belgium sent the Americans home after extra time in a gut-wrenching defeat. Twelve years later, the stakes are even higher. Win and you’re in the quarterfinals. Lose and you’re the third co-host to get bounced from your own tournament.

The crowd energy already feels different than it did during the group stage. Seattle showed up for the Australia game too, but this is louder. More organized. People are wearing those foam cowboy hats painted like flags. Some dude had a bald eagle on his shoulder. Not a real one, obviously, but still. The commitment is there.

Revenge Tour or Repeat History?

Mauricio Pochettino’s squad has looked shaky at times during this World Cup but they’ve found ways to survive. Belgium meanwhile is dangerous in that quiet, experienced way. They know how to win knockout games. The USMNT knows how to make them interesting and then fall short. That’s the history anyway.

But history doesn’t decide games. Players do. And the American supporters believe this time is different. You can feel it walking through the tailgate lots. People aren’t just hopeful. They’re expecting something.

Seattle has hosted some big matches before. The city knows how to throw a soccer party. But this one feels personal. There’s an edge to the chants. A little more bite in the air.

Kickoff can’t come soon enough. Either the USMNT finally gets that quarterfinal monkey off its back or Belgium breaks American hearts again. Either way, the city showed up to make sure the team knew they weren’t alone.
