Belgium Files Appeal Over Balogun Red Card After Trump Weighs In on USMNT World Cup Clash

Less than 24 hours before the United States men’s national team steps onto the field for its Round of 16 World Cup match against Belgium, the Belgian federation has filed an official appeal with FIFA. The target? A controversial red card issued to USMNT striker Folarin Balogun that initially ruled him out of the game.

According to The Athletic’s Adam Crafton, Belgium is pushing back against FIFA’s decision to suspend Balogun’s one-match ban. The American striker was sent off in last Wednesday’s 2-0 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina after stepping on the ankle of Taruk Muharemovic. The call drew immediate backlash from fans and analysts who thought the red card was harsh, but for a while it looked like Balogun would be stuck watching from the stands.

The Trump Factor

What makes this whole thing weirder? Former President Donald Trump apparently got involved. Trump posted about the incident on social media, calling the red card “ridiculous” and suggesting FIFA had it out for the USMNT. Whether that actually pushed FIFA to change course is unclear — the organization hasn’t said much — but the timing is suspicious.

Belgium’s appeal argues that Balogun shouldn’t have been punished at all, and that FIFA’s initial ruling to uphold the ban was influenced by outside pressure. The Belgian federation is asking for the suspension to be overturned entirely, which would clear Balogun to play. The USMNT hasn’t confirmed anything yet, and FIFA hasn’t announced a decision on the appeal.

What’s at Stake

This is a huge deal for both teams. The USMNT is already dealing with injuries and a tough Belgium side that’s been one of the best in the world for years. Losing Balogun — who scored the winner in the group stage against England — would be a massive blow. For Belgium, they’re probably less worried about Balogun specifically and more annoyed that the rules are shifting at the last minute.

Kickoff is set for Saturday evening. If FIFA rules against Belgium, Balogun suits up. If the appeal goes through, Belgium gets a slightly easier path through the US attack. Either way, the drama is far from over.
