Kawhi Leonard Hires New Agent Just as Raptors Contract Talks Begin

Kawhi Leonard is changing representation right before what could be his most important contract negotiation yet. And the timing is pretty telling.

ESPN’s Shams Charania reported Monday that Leonard has hired Harrison Gaines of SLASH Sports as his new agent. Gaines, who has served as Leonard’s business attorney over the past year, will now oversee the forward’s contract discussions with the Toronto Raptors.

This comes roughly a week after Leonard was traded to Toronto from San Antonio. The Raptors and Leonard are expected to begin talking about a contract extension soon. Gaines is scheduled to meet with Raptors officials in Toronto in the coming days to hash things out.

Leonard has one season and $50.3 million left on his current deal. That’s a lot of money. But for a player of his caliber, the real conversation is about what comes next.

Why a New Agent Now?

Switching agents right as extension talks ramp up isn’t standard practice. Most players lock in their representation well before the big-money conversations start. Leonard’s move suggests he wants someone he trusts deeply handling the details — and Gaines apparently earned that trust.

Gaines isn’t a household name in the sports agency world. But he’s been working behind the scenes with Leonard on the business side for over a year. That relationship likely matters more than the splashy reputation of a bigger agency.

The Raptors took a massive gamble trading for Leonard, knowing he could walk after one season. He’s been clear in the past that he wanted to play in Los Angeles. Toronto is not LA. But the Raptors are hoping a strong season and a real championship push can change his mind.

Leonard hasn’t said much publicly since the trade. That’s not surprising. He’s never been one for press conferences or soundbites. He lets his game do the talking, and when healthy, that game is top-five-in-the-league good.

What happens in these meetings with Gaines and the Raptors will tell us a lot. If Leonard is open to an extension, Toronto becomes a long-term contender. If he’s not, the Raptors might have to start thinking about Plan B before the trade deadline.

More on this as it develops.
