Manchester United might finally get their guy. Aurelien Tchouameni, the Real Madrid midfielder they’ve trailed since his Monaco days, is suddenly looking like a realistic target. And the reason comes down to a familiar face: Jose Mourinho.
Mourinho is back in charge at the Bernabeu after 13 years, and he wants to reshape the midfield. His priority is a playmaker — someone like Rodri or Enzo Fernandez — to bring more balance to the group. But that kind of move costs serious money. To fund it, someone has to go. Tchouameni, at 26 and with significant market value, is the most logical casualty.
Why This Time Is Different
United have been here before. They tried to sign Tchouameni in 2022 before he moved to Madrid for around £85 million. That deal triggered Casemiro’s exit, with the Brazilian heading to Old Trafford to let Tchouameni take over at the base of midfield. Since then, he’s made 195 appearances for Los Blancos, won La Liga and the Champions League, and established himself as one of the best defensive midfielders in the game.
But this summer feels different. Spanish journalist Jose Felix Diaz, who covers Real Madrid for AS, says United’s brass — led by sporting director Jason Wilcox — plans to hold talks with Madrid this week. Diaz told Twitch streamer Russel Martin that the interest is real and the club is ready to put a deal on the table. He also noted the two clubs have an “excellent relationship,” pointing to the recent transfers of Casemiro and Raphael Varane as evidence.
There’s also the Carreras connection. United opted not to exercise their buy-back option for Alvaro Carreras last summer, essentially letting Madrid sign the full-back from Benfica without competition. That move, per Diaz, has only strengthened the bond between the clubs.
What Tchouameni Brings
At 6’2″, the France international combines physical presence with sharp technical ability. He’s got the work rate and leadership you’d want in a midfield anchor, and he’s still only 26 — plenty of prime years left. United’s hierarchy see him as the long-term successor to Casemiro, who’s now 34 and fading. But the club’s midfield rebuild has hit some snags. They missed on Elliot Anderson. They missed on Mateus Fernandes. The plan is starting to crack.
That might explain why United is willing to spend big. Diaz says every Madrid player has a price, and the Red Devils are ready to match it. Whether that’s a record-breaking fee remains to be seen, but the ambition is clear.
For what it’s worth, sources close to United have downplayed the likelihood of a deal this week, suggesting Tchouameni is still expected to stay put. But with Mourinho pushing for a midfield revamp and United desperate to make a statement, the poker game is on. And Tchouameni appears to be the chip that could move the table.
