The Indiana Fever walked into Michelob ULTRA Arena on Sunday night and, for a while, made the defending champion Las Vegas Aces look like the ones playing on unfamiliar ground. Fever guard Sophie Cunningham, who was mic’d up during the game, had a simple explanation for why her team keeps getting that kind of energy on the road.
“A lot of teams say that every game is a home game, but I do really believe that,” Cunningham said. “I think we have the best fans in the W. Worldwide, I really think wherever we go it’s a home game for us, so we just try to work hard, play hard and we just gotta work on our consistency. They show out for us and we need to show out for them.”
That’s not just empty talk from a veteran guard. The Fever’s traveling fanbase has become a real story this season. Caitlin Clark’s arrival in 2024 supercharged interest in the franchise, and those new fans are following the team on the road. Indiana was up by double digits through three quarters against the Aces, leading a game that felt tilted in their favor even with Vegas hosting.
Fever fans have become the league’s loudest road crew
The Fever sit at 11-8, good for sixth in the standings through the first two months of the season. They’re 8-4 at home but only 3-4 away from Gainbridge Fieldhouse, so it’s not like they’ve figured out the road yet. Still, the energy Cunningham described is real. The league noticed. The Fever noticed.
“They show out for us and we need to show out for them,” Cunningham repeated, making sure the message landed.
For Indiana, the inconsistency Cunningham mentioned is the main thing holding them back. They turn the ball over too much. The defense has stretches where it’s sharp and then stretches where it’s not. If Clark and this group can clean up the giveaways and lock in for longer stretches, they should finish comfortably in the top half of the playoff bracket. Health matters too, obviously. But the raw talent is there.
Fever still working through growing pains
The Fever are still dealing with typical young-team issues. One quarter they look like contenders. The next they look like they’re still figuring out rotations. That’s going to happen when you’ve got a roster built around a generational rookie and a bunch of pieces trying to find their rhythm together.
But the fan support gives them a cushion other teams don’t have. When you know the crowd is with you even in someone else’s building, it changes how you play. Makes you want to run through a wall for them. Cunningham basically said as much.
Indiana led the Aces by double digits after three quarters. The final score will tell the full story, but the game itself showed what this team can be when it’s locked in. And the fans who traveled to Vegas showed what this franchise has become.
One that travels well. One that believes. One that expects to win, even on the road against the champs.
