Manchester United missed out on Mateus Fernandes and Elliot Anderson. Their dream midfield target, Aurelien Tchouameni, looks like a non-starter. So now INEOS is digging deeper into the scouting reports, and one name keeps popping up: Khephren Thuram.
The 6’4″ French midfielder has been on United’s radar for a while. But Juventus might finally be ready to sell. According to Italian outlet Tuttosport, the Old Lady is pushing hard to sign free agent Franck Kessie. To make that happen financially, someone has to go. And that someone appears to be Thuram.
The report says Juventus is actively working to move Thuram to the Premier League, with United, Liverpool, and Nottingham Forest all showing interest. The price tag? Around £43 million. That’s not pocket change, but in today’s market it’s reasonable for a 25-year-old midfielder with his physical tools and defensive output.
Why Thuram Makes Sense for United
Thuram isn’t flashy like some of the names United fans dream about. But he’s effective. He’s a dominant ball carrier who uses his size and strength to shield the ball, beat pressure, and move play from defense into the attack. That’s something United’s midfield has lacked for a while — a guy who can take control of a game without needing four touches and a highlight reel.
Analyst Ben Mattinson once called him a “young Paul Pogba.” That’s lofty praise, but the comparison makes sense when you watch Thuram glide through midfield with the ball at his feet. He’s not Pogba’s level of creativity, but the physical profile and comfort on the ball are there.
And at £43 million, he’s not breaking the bank. If United moves fast, they could lock him down and still have room to add another midfielder — someone like Johan Manzambi or AS Roma’s Manu Kone — without spending more than the £85 million they were prepared to drop on a single player.
The Italian Connection
United’s scouting department has been watching Serie A closely for a while now. They already brought in Brazilian midfielder Ederson from Atalanta. Adding another Italian-based midfielder wouldn’t be a surprise. Thuram and Ederson together would give United a blend of power, technical skill, and defensive discipline that Michael Carrick could work with in multiple formations.
Of course, Liverpool is also in the mix, and Nottingham Forest has the money to make things interesting. But United has the need, the budget, and the existing relationship with Serie A clubs. If they want this done, they can get it done.
Juventus isn’t messing around either. They need to clear payroll to bring in Kessie, and they’re reportedly working hard to find Thuram a home in England. That kind of motivation on the seller’s side usually means a deal can happen fast.
Whether United actually pulls the trigger or hesitates and lets another target slip away remains to be seen. But the door is open. All they have to do is walk through it.
