Manchester United might have struck out on one West Ham target this summer. But the next name on the list looks like a different kind of story entirely.
Crysencio Summerville has reportedly told his representatives he only wants to join United. According to The Touchline on X, the 24-year-old Dutch winger sees Old Trafford as the place where he can compete for the Premier League and Champions League. That’s a pretty direct message, and it puts United in a strong position if they decide to push for a deal.
United have already held initial talks with West Ham about Summerville, per Sky Sports. He’s been identified as the club’s top target on the left wing, which makes sense given the current roster situation. The Hammers are coming off a brutal season that ended in relegation, and that changes the math significantly.
What the Relegation Means for the Price Tag
Had West Ham stayed up, interested clubs reportedly would have needed to cough up around £70 million for Summerville. That number has dropped to roughly £40 million now thanks to a clause in his contract triggered by the drop to the Championship. That’s a huge swing.
For a player who was one of the few bright spots in east London last season, £40 million feels reasonable. Summerville brings explosive pace, serious dribbling ability, and a knack for striking the ball cleanly. His teammate Jean-Clair Todibo called him “incredible” and you can see why watching his tape from the World Cup.
Tottenham Are Still Lurking
United aren’t the only ones interested here. Tottenham have also been linked with Summerville, and they’ve already shown this summer they’re willing to spend on West Ham players. They just broke the bank for Mateus Fernandes after United failed to get that deal done despite Fernandes wanting to play with his idol Bruno Fernandes. Spurs met West Ham’s demands and Fernandes went to north London instead.
But Summerville’s camp is making it clear he wants United. That doesn’t guarantee the move happens — negotiating with relegated clubs can still get messy — but it gives United leverage they didn’t have with Fernandes.
One thing worth watching: West Ham’s negotiating position isn’t strong right now. They lost Fernandes for a record fee, but they’re also trying to avoid a fire sale. Selling Summerville at the reduced clause price might be the smartest path forward for everyone involved, especially if the player has made his intentions clear.
At £40 million for a 24-year-old winger with his kind of acceleration and end product, this feels like one United should win.
