Arsenal Just Lost a Transfer Battle to Man City Before the Season Even Started

Manchester City just picked up a win over Arsenal, and neither team has played a single Premier League minute yet.

City have reached an agreement to sign Leicester City’s Jeremy Monga, a 16-year-old winger who already has Premier League and Championship experience under his belt. The deal is worth £12.5 million, with £10 million guaranteed and another £2.5 million in add-ons, according to The Athletic.

How City Beat Out the Competition

This wasn’t a quiet recruitment. Arsenal had been chasing Monga hard, targeting him as a long-term option for the left side of their attack. But the Gunners reportedly backed off when the fee got too steep. That opened the door for City, and new manager Enzo Maresca stepped right through it.

Maresca knows Monga from his time at Leicester during the 2023/24 season. That connection reportedly helped push the deal over the line. You can’t blame a manager for leaning on a prior relationship when a teenager this talented hits the market.

Real Madrid and Chelsea also showed interest, but neither moved with the same urgency City did.

Who Is Jeremy Monga?

He’s a Coventry-born kid who turned professional at Leicester and has already made 30 senior appearances. That includes time in the Premier League and Leicester’s promotion-winning Championship campaign last season. For a 16-year-old, that’s not just promising. That’s rare.

He primarily plays on the wing, can beat defenders one-on-one, and has the kind of composure you don’t usually see in players his age. City are betting that under Maresca’s system — and with the development resources at the Etihad — Monga can grow into something special.

Arsenal fans might not love this one. Their club had a clear path to a young, exciting target and decided the price was too high. City didn’t hesitate. That difference in conviction could matter down the line.

Monga is expected to join City’s youth setup initially, but given how quickly he’s moved through Leicester’s ranks, don’t be surprised if he pushes for first-team minutes sooner than planned.
