Jalen Brunson isn’t the type to burn bridges. But he also isn’t going to pretend he forgot.
The Knicks guard became a champion before his former backcourt partner Luka Doncic did, and the reason, Brunson suggested this week, comes down to choices Dallas made long before the Mavericks ever traded Doncic in 2025.
Brunson spent four years in Dallas, sharing the backcourt with Doncic before leaving for New York in free agency. Since then, he’s led the Knicks to their first championship in 53 years. Doncic, now with the Lakers, reached the NBA Finals in 2024 but lost to Boston in five games. The contrast isn’t lost on anyone, including Brunson.
Speaking with the New York Post’s Bryan Fonseca, Brunson reflected on his relationship with Doncic and what might have been.
“I love him to death,” Brunson said of Doncic.

Then came the pause. The kind that says more than the words that follow.
“Well,” Brunson said slowly. “They made decisions and I’ll leave it at that. They made their decisions.”
He wasn’t talking about the trade. He was talking about the choices the Mavericks made before he ever hit free agency — the decisions that led him to walk away.
The Garden finally felt real
Brunson also opened up about what it really means to play at Madison Square Garden. Not as a visitor, but as a Knick.
He played there in college. He played there as a Maverick. But none of it clicked until he stepped onto the floor for his first playoff series in New York.
“First playoff series in New York,” Brunson told Sports Illustrated. “I think that’s when I understood that the Garden was different.”
He paused again, letting the memory sit.
“Like, I knew the Garden was always different but to be able to experience it, playoffs in the Garden, the Garden was real.”
That’s the kind of moment that separates a homecourt from just a building. And it’s the kind of feeling that Brunson, now a champion, gets to carry into the 2026-27 season as the Knicks defend their title.
Whatever happened in Dallas, Brunson has made peace with it. He just hasn’t forgotten it.
