Tiago Splitter is officially listed as the head coach of the Chicago Bulls Summer League squad. He just won’t be there the whole time.
NBA insider Marc Stein reported Friday that Splitter is expected to coach the team for only a game or two before handing things off to someone else. The arrangement gives the Bulls’ new head coach a quick look at his young players in a live setting without committing him to the full Summer League grind.
For Splitter, this is one of his first real on-court moments since taking the Bulls job. He came to Chicago after a successful interim stint with the Portland Trail Blazers, and Summer League is essentially a soft opening for what he wants to build.
Rookie Watch: Caleb Wilson and Cameron Boozer
The Bulls open their Summer League slate on July 10 against the Memphis Grizzlies. That game features the No. 4 overall pick, Caleb Wilson, making his pro debut. He’s matched up against No. 3 pick Cameron Boozer, which should give fans a real early look at two of the top rookies the 2026 draft produced. Tipoff is at 8 p.m. ET on Prime Video.
Wilson is the headliner for a Bulls roster that’s essentially starting over. New executive Bryson Graham and Splitter are building from the ground up, and Summer League is step one in figuring out which young pieces actually stick.
Splitter won’t be on the sideline for all of it. But his brief appearance should show a little of what he’s thinking offensively and defensively, and whether the Bulls are going to play fast or grind it out. It’s not a full blueprint, but it’s a start.
Summer League is usually about evaluation anyway. Rookies, second-year guys, undrafted free agents trying to catch a roster spot. It’s chaotic and often ugly basketball, but coaching staffs use it to install basic concepts before training camp. Splitter getting in for a couple games is better than nothing, even if he’s not there for the whole thing.
Stein did not report who will take over after Splitter steps back. The team has not confirmed a secondary coach for the remainder of the schedule.
