Cristiano Ronaldo has bigger things on his mind right now than how he looks standing next to a rapper. But that didn’t stop Drake from making it a moment.
The Canadian artist posted a photo with Ronaldo during Portugal’s World Cup run, and the caption was pure insecurity in all caps: “We are the same height I swear!!” Drake wrote on his Instagram story, tagging Ronaldo. Online, both men are listed at 6-foot-2. In the photo, Ronaldo clearly has a couple inches on him. It’s not even close.
Drake isn’t the first guy to realize that soccer stars tend to look bigger in person than they do on a screen. But the whole thing was funny because he brought it up himself. You don’t usually see someone preemptively defend their height while standing next to a guy who just scored a penalty in a World Cup knockout match.
The Ronaldo situation on the field
Speaking of that penalty: Ronaldo converted from the spot in the 63rd minute of Portugal’s Round of 16 clash against Croatia. Goncalo Ramos bagged the winner in the 94th. That made it three goals for the tournament for Ronaldo, which sounds fine until you look at the actual scoring table.
Lionel Messi has seven. Kylian Mbappe has six. Ronaldo is sitting on three, with two of those coming against Uzbekistan in a 5-0 group stage blowout. The Golden Boot race is not really a race right now.
Portugal has been grinding through this tournament without ever looking like the team that cruised through qualifying. Bruno Fernandes, Vitinha and Joao Neves have all been below their usual level. The team has created chances but lacks that fluid connection they had a year ago. Against Croatia, they got the result but didn’t dominate.
And now Spain is waiting in the next round. That is not a team you want to face when your offense is sputtering. Spain has a clear identity, a deep roster and the kind of tactical discipline that punishes teams still searching for their rhythm.
Portugal will need to be a lot better to keep this World Cup going. Ronaldo might get another photo op or two if they do. But if they don’t, that picture with Drake might end up being one of the lighter memories from this tournament.
