Skip Bayless Says Taylor Swift Should Have Postponed Her Wedding for a World Cup Game

Skip Bayless took a swing at Taylor Swift on X Wednesday, and it was not about her music. It was about her timing.

The controversial sports commentator argued that Swift should have delayed her wedding to Travis Kelce so guests could watch Argentina’s Round of 32 World Cup match against Cape Verde. The ceremony, held at Madison Square Garden with a no-phones policy, apparently clashed with the game.

“How dare Taylor Swift make her guests miss this Messi-Cape Verde knockout match. They aren’t even allowed to keep tabs on their phones! She should’ve postponed,” Bayless wrote.

The Game That Would Not Quit

Argentina came into that match as the defending champions, facing a Cape Verde side ranked 64th in the world. On paper, this looked like a warmup. It was not.

Lionel Messi opened the scoring in the 29th minute, and things seemed normal. Then Deroy Duarte equalized in the 52nd minute, and the script flipped. Argentina needed until the 92nd minute to regain the lead, only for Cape Verde to answer again in the 103rd minute. An own goal in the 111th minute finally gave Argentina a 3-2 win.

Cape Verde played with nothing to lose and nearly pulled off one of the biggest upsets in tournament history. They earned real respect. Messi even promised his jersey to goalkeeper Vozinha after the final whistle. That is not something you see every day.

Bayless has a point, even if he delivered it with his usual sharp edge. This was not just another World Cup game. It was the kind of match that reminds people why they love the sport. And Swift’s guests missed the whole thing because they were at a wedding with their phones locked up.

Look, Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce getting married is a huge deal. It is a cultural moment. But when you stack it against a World Cup knockout game that went to extra time and featured Messi sweating against a team nobody expected to be there, the wedding lost some ground. At least from a sports perspective.

Bayless might have sounded dramatic, but he was not wrong about one thing. That game was something special. And for the people who had to miss it, that stings a little.
