Manchester United wanted to make Aurelien Tchouameni their big summer splash in midfield. The Frenchman is 26, arguably the best defensive midfielder on the planet, and someone who could slot next to Kobbie Mainoo and fix a lot of what’s gone wrong in United’s middle third.
But according to the Manchester Evening News, this thing is basically not happening. Not right now anyway.
The paper reports that United would absolutely be interested if Tchouameni became available. But so far, Real Madrid hasn’t sent any signal that he’s for sale. And without that signal, there’s nothing to chase.
United Learned From Frenkie de Jong’s Ghost
This feels familiar in a bad way. Remember the Frenkie de Jong saga from a few years ago? United spent an entire summer negotiating with Barcelona for a player who never really wanted to leave. They learned that lesson the hard way. Now the club says it only wants players who actually want to be there.
That philosophy is why they passed on Mateus Fernandes. The Portuguese midfielder wasn’t clear about making Old Trafford his priority, so United walked. Same logic applies here.
What Tchouameni Would Need to Do
The path is straightforward but narrow. Tchouameni would have to tell Real Madrid he wants out and make it clear that Manchester is his preferred destination. Madrid is reportedly open to a sale if the player pushes for it. But without that push, United isn’t going to waste its summer chasing another will-he-won’t-he situation.
This is frustrating for United fans. Tchouameni is that rare midfielder who can defend, pass, and run the game from deep. Pairing him with Mainoo would give United a spine they’ve lacked since the days of Carrick and Scholes. But the club has been burned too many times by transfer sagas that go nowhere.
United has already missed out on top targets like Elliot Anderson and Fernandes. Adding Tchouameni to that list would sting. But the club seems willing to take that hit rather than repeat old mistakes.
For now, the ball is in Tchouameni’s court. If he wants this move, he knows what to do. If he doesn’t, United will move on to someone who does.
