Manchester United Could Bring Wilfred Ndidi Back to the Premier League for Cheap

Manchester United’s summer midfield search has taken a few unexpected turns. After whiffing on Elliot Anderson and Mateus Fernandes, both of whom went for record fees to Manchester City and Tottenham, the club is now looking at older, cheaper options. And one name that keeps popping up is Wilfred Ndidi.

According to reports from Footy-Africa, United is in the mix alongside newly promoted Hull City to sign the 29-year-old Nigerian midfielder from Besiktas. Ndidi spent seven seasons at Leicester City before moving to Turkey last summer. He has 220 Premier League appearances to his name and a reputation for chewing up attacks with his interceptions and tackles.

The asking price is surprisingly low. Besiktas bought Ndidi for about $8.8 million last year and would reportedly let him go for a similar fee. That kind of money is pocket change for most Premier League clubs, especially one trying to avoid another summer of overspending like United. The club already has a deal in place for Atalanta’s Ederson, who will join after the World Cup for around $44 million. Adding Ndidi for a fraction of that would give them two experienced midfielders for less than the cost of one star player.

Why Ndidi Makes Sense for United Right Now

United’s midfield has been a problem for years. They need someone who can sit deeper and let the more creative players push forward. Ndidi is not flashy. He’s never going to score ten goals a season. But he reads the game well and makes life miserable for opponents trying to build through the middle. That kind of player is hard to find on the cheap.

And the timing might be right. Ndidi was vice-captain at Besiktas under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, but Solskjaer is gone now. That creates uncertainty. Ndidi might be open to returning to England, where he already knows the league. Hull City has Premier League money now and wants experience. But United is still Manchester United. If they come calling, it’s hard to say no.

There is no guarantee this happens. United is also reportedly discussing Aurelien Tchouameni and Alex Scott internally, according to Fabrizio Romano. Those are younger, higher-profile options. But they would cost significantly more. Ndidi is the fallback, the budget-friendly option that lets INEOS point at the balance sheet and say they addressed a need without breaking the bank.

Hull City will have something to say about it. They need midfielders too and they have the promotion momentum. But if United pushes, this becomes a one-horse race pretty fast. For now, both clubs are watching and waiting.
