Bill Simmons Coined ‘Snowtime Lakers’ and the Internet Is Running With It

Bill Simmons has been known to spit out nicknames that stick, and his latest one for the revamped Lakers is already everywhere on social media. During a recent podcast, the longtime NBA analyst looked at the Lakers’ roster on paper and landed on something he called the “Snowtime Lakers.” The joke was obvious. This team, at least as currently constructed, is heavy on white players. And people on X are absolutely loving it.

Luka Doncic, Austin Reaves, and Walker Kessler project as the core three. Dalton Knecht, Jake LaRavia, and Sandro Mamukelashvili are likely to see real minutes. Maxi Kleber and Drew Timme fill out the back end. It’s a roster that looks different from the flashy, fast-breaking “Showtime” Lakers of the 1980s, and Simmons just went ahead and gave it a new label.

Social media grabbed it and ran

The nickname didn’t just sit there. It spread fast. One user posted a clip with the caption, “They calling them the Snowtime Lakers ❄️😂.” Another said, “Idk ‘Snowtime Lakers’ has a nice ring to it.” Somebody else called it “elite.” A fan on X wrote, “The snowtime lakers is an insane nickname.” Another person said it was “f****** nuts lmao.” And one user just dropped four skull emojis after repeating what Simmons said.

It helps that the original “Showtime” Lakers had Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and James Worthy — a team defined by style and star power. The 2026-27 version doesn’t have that kind of identity yet. But it does have a nickname that appears to be sticking, even if it started as a joke.

Stephen A. Smith had a different take

While Simmons was having fun with the roster, Stephen A. Smith went the other direction. He went on a rant saying the Lakers have no shot at winning a championship next season. That might end up being true. Or it might not. We won’t know until games actually start, and the season doesn’t tip off until late October. The Lakers have made a ton of moves this offseason after LeBron James announced he wasn’t coming back. The front office has been aggressive. Whether that aggression adds up to anything is still a question mark.

For now, the “Snowtime” thing has taken on a life of its own. It’s funny, it’s a little absurd, and it’s getting people talking about a Lakers team that otherwise might be a hard sell. That alone probably counts as a win for a franchise in transition.
