Jaylen Brown is already setting the stage for his return to Boston. And he’s not planning on taking the high road.
The newly acquired Philadelphia 76ers wing went live on his Twitch stream Thursday night and made it clear he knows exactly how this is going to play out when he steps foot back in TD Garden. He’s ready for the boos. He’s ready for the signs. He’s even ready to play the part.
“They are going to turn me into the villain, and I’m going to just embrace it,” Brown said on stream. “So this season, let’s get it. The villain has emerged. That’s what y’all want me to be? Let’s get it.”
The trade that sent Brown to Philadelphia happened earlier this week and it shook the whole Eastern Conference. Boston shipped the 29-year-old to the 76ers for a package centered around Paul George, who is 36 and coming off another injury-shortened season, along with two first-round picks and two second-round picks. Most analysts graded the deal as a clear win for Philly.
Brown spent his entire 10-year career in Boston. He helped the Celtics win a title in 2024. He was an All-Star. He was the guy who played through injuries and never complained about sharing the spotlight with Jayson Tatum. But there was always a quiet tension underneath — whispers that Brown wanted more control of the offense, that he was tired of being the co-pilot. The advanced stats never loved his high-volume midrange game, and his turnover numbers frustrated a certain slice of the fanbase. Over time, that small but vocal group of fans started to sour on him.
Now those same fans will get their chance to let him hear it.
But here’s the thing. Brown didn’t force his way out. He didn’t opt out and sign somewhere else. The Celtics traded him. That usually buys a player some goodwill on their first trip back. Crowds are more forgiving when the front office pulls the trigger. Still, Brown seems convinced the reception won’t be warm.
“The villain has emerged,” he repeated on stream, like he was already rehearsing for the moment.
Philadelphia fans, for what it’s worth, have already embraced him. The 76ers are coming off another frustrating postseason exit and the front office needed to make a swing. Adding an in-prime star like Brown changes the entire math for a team built around Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey.
The first meeting between the 76ers and Celtics is still months away. But Brown is already thinking about it. And based on his tone, he’s going to make sure the Garden crowd remembers exactly what they gave up on.
