Mitchell Robinson is a Celtic now. And if you believe what he posted on social media, he didn’t exactly choose this path.
The former Knicks center agreed to a three-year, $47.4 million deal with Boston in free agency. But instead of the usual celebratory post, Robinson dropped something that felt more like a confession. He wrote a long thank-you note to New York fans and the organization, calling the last eight years “the highlight of my life.” Then came the part that made people stop scrolling.
His former teammate OG Anunoby reacted to the news with a sad-face emoji on Instagram. Robinson replied: “I tried brother I didn’t want this to happen hopefully the truth comes out at some point.”
That quote is doing a lot of work. It suggests Robinson didn’t want to leave. It suggests something happened behind the scenes that we don’t know about yet. The Knicks have not commented on the exchange, and Robinson hasn’t elaborated. But in the age of social media breadcrumbs, this is about as loud as a quiet post gets.

The Knicks are the defending champions. They just won a title. They’re still the favorites to repeat in the Eastern Conference next season, according to The Athletic’s James Edwards III, who wrote that despite Miami and Philadelphia making blockbuster moves for Giannis Antetokounmpo and Jaylen Brown, “the Knicks should still emerge as favorites.”
And yet, they let a homegrown big man walk. Robinson spent eight years in New York. He was part of the core that finally got over the hump. Now he’s heading to a rival, joining Paul George and Mike Conley Jr. as Boston’s big free agency additions. The Celtics got him on a deal that’s reasonable for a starting center who knows his role.
But Robinson’s message to Anunoby makes you wonder if the Knicks even gave him a real chance to stay. The phrase “the truth comes out” implies he feels misrepresented somehow. Maybe they lowballed him in negotiations. Maybe they told him one thing and did another. Maybe the Knicks had their eyes on a different move and Robinson was collateral damage.
We don’t know yet. But the guy who just left a championship team seems hurt about it. That’s not nothing.
Robinson’s full goodbye to Knicks fans included this: “I know it’s a lot of emotions going around trust me I feel it myself But I will always have love for where it all started! I love you and will miss you! Once a Knick always a Knick.”
The ball will tip eventually. Robinson will suit up in green. The Knicks will move on. But that Instagram reply is going to hang in the air until someone explains what actually happened.
