Arsenal Youth Exodus? Man City Circles as 16-Year-Old Midfielder Hits Free Agency

Manchester City is sniffing around Arsenal’s academy again. This time it’s Mishel Nduka, a 16-year-old midfielder whose contract expires today after one year at Hale End.

Nduka joined the Gunners from Charlton Athletic last summer and immediately turned heads. He’s been called one of the top young midfielders in England. That reputation has drawn attention from City, Manchester United, Tottenham, and Liverpool. But City might have the biggest incentive to push hard — they’re bracing for two of their own youth midfielders to leave.

Xavier Parker and David Eze are expected to move on this summer. Multiple Premier League rivals are eyeing both. If that happens, City sees Nduka as a plug-and-play replacement. The kid can handle the ball under pressure, reads the game well for his age, and has the frame to grow into a physical Premier League midfielder.

Arsenal has offered Nduka improved terms and clearly wants to keep him. But he’s technically out of contract as of today, June 30, which means he can walk for nothing — or very little in compensation. That’s the kind of situation that gets rival clubs circling fast.

It’s not just Nduka in the balance

Another name to watch is Emerson Nwaneri. He’s 15 years old and already holds a wild stat — youngest player ever to start for Arsenal’s under-21s, debuting in Premier League 2 against Liverpool at age 15 years and 152 days. That’s not a typo. Kid was 15.

Nwaneri has played for the Gunners at under-18 and under-19 levels. But his family isn’t convinced the path to the senior team is clear. Sources say there are real concerns he might not sign his scholarship and could leave this summer. If both Nduka and Nwaneri go, that’s a serious hit to Arsenal’s academy pipeline.

Arsenal has a reputation for developing young talent, but keeping elite teenagers happy is getting harder. Top clubs are offering clearer pathways or bigger immediate money. City in particular has been aggressive with academy poaching in recent years.

Other clubs are watching the situation closely. Once word gets out that Nduka might be available for real, expect more suitors to pop up. The summer transfer window for youth players is always chaotic, but this year feels different. Several Premier League academies are reshaping their rosters, and everyone wants the guys who could turn into first-team stars in a couple years.

For now, Nduka holds the cards. He can stay at Arsenal, bet on himself, and chase a future at the Emirates. Or he can take a different route, possibly with City, and see where that leads. His decision might also influence what Nwaneri does next. And that ripple effect could reshape two academy rosters before the season even starts.
