Manchester United has spent the summer chasing midfielders, but the latest rumor out of Spain suggests they might end up with a much bigger name than anyone expected. Real Madrid is reportedly open to selling Aurelien Tchouameni, and United is paying close attention.
The Athletic reports that new Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho wants to bring in a creative midfielder, and Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez — valued at around £120 million — is the top target. But with stars like Eduardo Camavinga viewed as essentially untouchable by people close to the player, Madrid’s front office sees Tchouameni as the more realistic piece to move.
It’s a surprising shift for a player who’s been a regular starter for both Real and the French national team. Tchouameni, 26, stands 6’2″ and has a Champions League trophy on his resume. He’s exactly the kind of imposing midfield presence United has lacked since Casemiro’s form started slipping.
Why United is in the mix
This isn’t new interest. Back in May, The Athletic reported that United scouts watched Tchouameni in person last season. The same report said United was “in position should Madrid express an openness to selling.” Now that openness appears real.
United originally looked at West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes after a deal for Elliot Anderson fell through. But West Ham wants £85 million for Fernandes, and Tottenham is also pushing hard. United decided it wasn’t worth getting into a bidding war at that price.
So Tchouameni suddenly looks like the smarter play. He’s proven at the highest level, still has years ahead of him, and Real is motivated to sell. His contract runs through 2028, so Madrid holds leverage on price, but they’re not exactly in a position to squeeze every last euro. They’ve gone two seasons without a major trophy, and Mourinho is in charge of a roster overhaul.
What Madrid wants
The Athletic’s report makes it clear: Madrid needs to offload a midfielder to free up room — and cash — for a creative addition. Camavinga has said through his camp that leaving is impossible, which forces Real to look at Tchouameni as the most sellable asset in that midfield group.
For United, the fit is obvious. They need a destroyer in the middle who can let their attackers play freely. Tchouameni reads the game well, covers ground, and has the physicality to handle the Premier League. He’s also still young enough to grow into the role long-term.
The question now is whether United will actually make a move. The club has been burned before by high-profile targets who ended up staying put. But with Real signaling they’re willing to talk, this might be the moment to test their resolve.
Nothing is done yet. But the pieces are moving.
