Barcelona Made the Call on Their World Cup Striker. Here’s the Deal.

Barcelona went ahead and made it official this week. The club picked up the purchase option on Hamza Abdelkarim, the young Egyptian striker who spent the second half of last season on loan with their U19 squad. It’s a permanent move now, with a contract running through June 2029.

Abdelkarim is 19 years old, stands tall in the box, and has already earned a spot in Egypt’s World Cup squad for this summer’s tournament in North America. That’s a pretty quick rise for a guy who was still playing for Al Ahly in Cairo less than a year ago.

What He Did at Barca’s Youth Level

His numbers with Barcelona’s U19s are solid. Eleven appearances total. Six goals. That’s a goal every other game or so, which for a teenager adjusting to a new country and a new style of play is nothing to shrug at. He’s not the flashiest guy on the ball from what scouts have said. But he’s physical, he’s got good instincts around goal, and he’s clearly got the frame to handle the bump-and-grind of senior football.

The club didn’t release financial details on the buy option. But those kinds of moves for unproven young players usually come with a modest fee and performance-based add-ons. If he blows up at the World Cup, that number could look like a steal.

World Cup Summer Changes the Timeline

The timing here is interesting. Most loan-to-permanent decisions get wrapped up well before a major tournament. But Barcelona waited until after Abdelkarim got called up to Egypt’s squad. Maybe they wanted to see how he’d handle the pressure of international competition before committing. Or maybe the World Cup buzz made them move faster. Either way, the kid now heads to the tournament knowing his club future is locked in.

Barcelona’s official statement was pretty straightforward: they informed Al Ahly they were exercising the option, and Abdelkarim will sign for three seasons. No grand unveiling. No hype video with dramatic music. Just a business move. Which, honestly, might be the smartest way to handle a young player who hasn’t proven anything at the top level yet.

What happens next depends on how much he plays in the World Cup and whether he can carry that momentum into preseason. Barca’s senior attack is crowded. But if he shows out against senior international defenders this summer, he could force his way into first-team conversations faster than anyone expected.
