Six Teams Already Locked Into World Cup 2026 Knockout Round After Just Two Games

The 2026 World Cup is barely into its second week, and we already have a clearer picture of who’s sticking around for the knockout stage. Thanks to the tournament’s expansion to 48 teams, the round of 32 is a new thing this time. And six teams have punched their tickets early.

That leaves 26 open slots with a third round of group games still to play. That’s a lot of math for fans to do, but the basics are simple: win your group, and you know exactly when and where you play next.

Co-hosts coasting, but not without drama

Mexico handled business in Group A. They beat South Africa 2-0 in the opener, then squeezed past South Korea 1-0. That was enough to secure top spot, setting up a round-of-32 game on Tuesday, June 30 at Azteca Stadium. They’ll face one of the best third-place teams from Groups C, E, F, H, or I. No easy beats there, but a home crowd is a home crowd.

The USMNT came out swinging. A shocking 4-1 win over Paraguay, powered by Folarin Balogun’s double, got everyone’s attention. Then they handled Australia 2-0. Mauricio Pochettino’s squad now heads to San Francisco for a Wednesday, July 1 matchup against a third-place team from Groups B, E, F, I, or J. Balogun’s up to three goals so far, and he’s looking like the guy who can carry this team deeper than anyone expected.

Germany’s weird path to the knockout round

Julian Nagelsmann’s team dropped a 7-1 hammer on Curacao in the opener. That was the biggest win of the first gameweek. But then they nearly gave it all back, needing a late Denis Undav goal to squeeze past Ivory Coast 2-1. They’re in, but the swagger from game one took a hit. Their first knockout game is Monday, June 29 in Boston, against a third-place team from Groups A, B, C, D, or F.

Messi keeps rewriting the record book

Lionel Messi kicked things off with a hat trick in a 3-0 win, then added two more in a 2-0 victory over Austria. That’s five goals in two games, and he’s now sitting alone atop the all-time World Cup scoring chart with 18. His Argentina side faces Group H runners-up on Friday, July 3 in Miami. As things stand, that’s Uruguay. That’s a heavyweight fight right out of the gate.

France and Norway set up a group finale with real stakes

France rolled through Senegal 3-1 and then beat Iraq 3-0. Kylian Mbappe has been the engine, scoring braces in both games. He’s at 16 World Cup goals now, two behind Messi. But France hasn’t locked up Group I yet. That’s because their final group opponent is Norway, and Norway has been impressive in its own right.

Erling Haaland’s first World Cup has been a show. He scored twice in a 4-1 win over Iraq and another brace in a wild 3-2 win over Senegal. Both teams are through to the knockout round, but the winner of their head-to-head takes top spot and an easier path. That game is going to be something. Mbappe versus Haaland. France versus Norway. Winner gets the group crown.

The round of 32 is still taking shape, but the storylines are already piling up.
