Messi Leads Golden Boot Race With 5 Goals. Mbappe and Haaland Are Right Behind Him.

The 2026 World Cup golden boot race is heating up fast. And it’s absolutely loaded with star power.

Lionel Messi scored twice against Austria to go with that hat trick he dropped on Algeria. That puts him at five goals for the tournament. And he did all that after missing a penalty. Which honestly might be the most terrifying part for everyone else. When he’s not perfect from the spot he just goes out and scores anyway.

But Messi isn’t running away with this thing. Not yet.

Kylian Mbappe scored twice for France on a day where play was delayed almost two hours because of weather. That guy finds ways to produce no matter what’s happening around him. He’s sitting at four goals. So is Erling Haaland. The Norway star has his team in position for a deep run too and Norway fans have already produced another one of those iconic celebrations that are becoming a trademark for this squad.

How the tiebreaker works

If players are deadlocked on goals, the golden boot goes to whoever has more assists. If that’s still tied it comes down to minutes played and goals per minute. So every little detail matters.

Right now it’s Messi at five. Then Mbappe and Haaland at four. Deniz Undav has three goals for Germany plus two assists so he’s ahead of Jonathan David who has three goals but fewer assists.

Then there’s a whole pack at two goals. Harry Kane is in that group. So are Vinicius Jr, Cody Gakpo, Kai Havertz and Folarin Balogun for the US. Canada has two players sitting at two goals each with Jonathan David and Cyle Larin. Japan has two guys there too with Ayase Ueda and Daichi Kamada.

The knockout rounds start soon and that’s usually where these races get decided. Fewer games but higher stakes and tighter defenses. Or at least that’s the theory. Sometimes a blowout in the round of 16 changes everything.
