Benjamin Sesko isn’t going anywhere. That’s the message Manchester United have sent to Barcelona and Atletico Madrid after the clubs came sniffing around their 23-year-old striker this summer.
According to TEAMtalk, United flatly rejected inquiries made by intermediaries working for both Spanish clubs. The response was straightforward. No negotiations. No price tag. Not interested.
It’s a hard pivot from how Sesko’s first season at Old Trafford started. He arrived from RB Leipzig for a massive £73.7 million and spent the early months looking like a guy trying to figure out where he fit. Starts were hard to come by. The rhythm wasn’t there. For a while it felt like one of those signings that might take a full year to click.
Then Michael Carrick took over as manager and everything changed.
Carrick made Sesko a focal point. And the Slovenian repaid that trust in a big way. No one scored more Premier League goals than him after January 1. He finished with 11 goals total despite starting only 17 matches. Those are wild numbers for a guy who wasn’t even a regular starter for half the season.
Why Barcelona and Atletico Came Calling
The interest from both clubs isn’t random. Barcelona still view Julian Alvarez as their dream signing, but that deal is complicated and far from guaranteed. So they’re lining up alternatives just in case. Sesko is on that list.
Atletico’s situation is a little different. They’re staring at the possibility of losing Alvarez themselves and moving on from Alexander Sorloth. That’s two forwards they might need to replace this summer. Sesko fits the profile of the kind of striker Simeone likes — physical, quick, smart with his runs.
But United aren’t budging. The belief inside the club is that Sesko is just scratching the surface. His best years are still ahead of him and Carrick sees him as a central piece of what they’re building.
The feeling appears to be mutual. People close to Sesko say he loves playing for Carrick. He’s talked about the freedom he gets in the system and how much that trust matters to his game.
United are still active in the market, to be clear. They’re looking for a versatile forward, especially with Joshua Zirkzee expected to leave. But that search has nothing to do with Sesko. They’re not planning for a replacement. They’re planning for who plays alongside him.
