Zack Wheeler is having a monster season for the Phillies. He just doesn’t want to hear about it from anyone who overlooked him first.
The Philadelphia right-hander was left off the initial National League All-Star roster even though he’s been one of the best pitchers in baseball when healthy. He missed some time on the injured list, but since returning, he’s been dominant. On Sunday, he’s scheduled to start for the Phillies. And somewhere in between, the league apparently came calling with a belated invitation to the All-Star Game.
Wheeler declined. Not quietly, either.
According to reporter Cole Weintraub, Wheeler said he felt “disrespected” by the whole process and didn’t want to be treated like a “fifth option.” That’s a direct quote. He didn’t soften it or walk it back. He just said it.
Look at the numbers and you can see why he’s upset. Across 14 starts this season, Wheeler has a 2.28 ERA. He’s struck out 98 batters in 87 innings. That’s not just good. That’s elite. The kind of season that usually gets you on the roster without needing a replacement spot.
Why Wheeler turned down the invite
It’s not complicated, really. Wheeler made it clear he didn’t appreciate being an afterthought. The team reached out once they had an opening, but by then, the damage was done. Wheeler saw the initial snub as evidence that his work wasn’t valued the way it should be.
And honestly, can you blame him? He’s been the anchor of a Phillies rotation that has kept the team in the NL East race. Philadelphia entered Saturday’s game against the Tigers at 52-43, sitting second in the division three games back of Atlanta. Without Wheeler, that record probably looks a lot worse.
So now the All-Star drama is over. Wheeler stays home, or at least he gets a few days off while the game happens without him. The Phillies will take that. They need him fresh for the second half anyway.
Wheeler and the team still have a couple games left before the break. They’ll want to finish strong, especially with Atlanta breathing down their necks. But the message from Wheeler is already clear: he’s not here to be your backup plan.
