Yankees’ Jazz Chisholm Exits After Head-On Collision with Jasson Dominguez in Outfield

Jazz Chisholm Jr. left Monday’s game against the Detroit Tigers after a violent collision with his own teammate, and it’s the kind of play that makes you wonder who was calling for the ball.

In the top of the fourth inning at Yankee Stadium, with the Yankees already down 7-0, Tigers infielder Hao-Yu Lee popped one up toward second base. The ball drifted into shallow right field. Chisholm, the second baseman, started backpedaling. Outfielder Jasson Dominguez was charging in hard from right.

Neither guy heard the other, apparently. Chisholm never saw Dominguez coming. They collided at full speed. Dominguez stayed on his feet and actually caught the ball for the out. Chisholm got knocked to the ground and stayed down.

Trainers ran out and checked on him. He left the game after that. No word yet on what exactly the injury is, but the team hasn’t said much beyond that he was removed for precautionary reasons.

Chisholm finished the day 0-for-1. It’s been a rough stretch. He got ejected Sunday against Boston for arguing a third-strike call with the home plate umpire. The Yankees lost that one 5-4.

Trade rumors keep circling

Chisholm’s season numbers are fine but not great. He’s hitting .233 with 63 hits, 12 homers, and 33 RBIs. He’s been solid on the bases — 24 steals and 42 runs scored. But the consistency at the plate just hasn’t been there.

He’s a free agent after this season, and the trade rumors have been picking up steam for weeks. Some insiders think the Yankees might move him before the deadline, especially if they’re looking to shake things up. The front office hasn’t tipped its hand, but you don’t let a guy walk for nothing if you can get something back.

Right now the Yankees sit at 48-35, one game behind the Rays in the AL East. They’ve been hot and cold all year. Losing Chisholm for any extended period wouldn’t help, but the way he’s been playing lately, some fans online are already wondering if this collision just sped up a decision the team was already leaning toward.

Dominguez stayed in the game. The kid made the catch, which is impressive, but you hate to see two young players run into each other like that. It looked ugly in real time. Replays showed Chisholm taking the worst of it.

No update yet on whether he’ll need imaging or time off. The Yankees play Detroit again Tuesday. We’ll see who’s in the lineup.
