Yankees and Rays Could Be Fighting Over the Same Catcher. Here’s Why It Matters.

The New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays just split a four-game series, but the real battle might be off the field. Both teams are hunting for the same kind of help ahead of the trade deadline, and it’s not a power bat or an ace reliever. It’s a catcher.

Catcher has been a black hole for the Yankees this season. Austin Wells has been the primary guy behind the plate, and his numbers are brutal: a .173 average, .250 on-base, .252 slugging over 329 plate appearances. He’s the least productive qualified hitter in baseball, minimum 200 at-bats. That’s not just a slump, that’s a crisis. The Rays haven’t been great either. Their catchers — Nick Fortes and Hunter Feduccia — have combined for a .250/.307/.349 slash line. It’s not impressive, but compared to New York’s numbers, it looks almost respectable.

So where do they turn? According to MLB.com, both clubs have their eye on the same guy: Minnesota Twins catcher Ryan Jeffers. Jeffers has been on the injured list since May 19 with a fractured hamate bone in his left hand, but there’s optimism he could be activated as soon as this Friday. Before the injury, he was hitting .295 with seven homers and 26 RBIs in 37 games. That kind of production would be a massive upgrade for either team.

The speculation around Jeffers has been floating around for a while. Ken Rosenthal mentioned it’s still a topic of conversation — the Yankees in particular have been linked to the right-handed hitter. But the Twins haven’t exactly been eager to move him, and they’re not out of the playoff picture yet either. It’s not a done deal by any stretch.

What’s interesting is that these two teams don’t usually go after the same targets. The Yankees have the money and the prospect capital. The Rays have to be more creative. But both have a clear need, and the trade deadline is August 3. That’s not a lot of time for posturing.

The Yankees could use a catcher who can at least get on base. The Rays need someone who can stay healthy and provide some pop. Jeffers checks both boxes when he’s right. The question is whether Minnesota is ready to deal him, and if either club is willing to pay the price.

One thing is certain: the AL East race is tight, and a single upgrade behind the plate could swing a few games. Both teams know it. The next few weeks will tell us who wants it more.
