The Texas Rangers just needed one swing. Wyatt Langford gave it to them.
With the game on the line against the Los Angeles Angels, Langford stepped in and delivered a walk-off single. It wasn’t pretty, but it was enough. The Rangers took the series and kept their grip on a slim AL West lead.
After the game, Langford kept it simple.
“It’s awesome. I love to play baseball. That’s why I do it — to be able to be back out there and help the team win. Obviously, it was a tough game. We played really well. Then it was just one bad inning, really. Being able to come back and pull that out was super huge for the team,” Langford said, according to MLB.com’s Kennedi Landry.
That one bad inning nearly cost them. But Langford, back in the lineup after a hamstring injury, didn’t let it.
This is the kind of win that can shift momentum. The Rangers had just lost one the day before. They’re in a division race that’s tighter than a clubhouse handshake. Every game matters. Every at-bat feels bigger.
Langford hit third in the order, which tells you what the coaching staff thinks of him. He’s now slashing .275 with eight homers, 21 RBIs, and 23 runs. Those numbers aren’t flashy, but they’re solid. And with Josh Jung also back in the mix, the Rangers have a little more thump in the middle of the lineup.
The numbers aren’t great overall though. Texas ranks 13th in batting average and on-base percentage. They’re 25th in runs scored, 21st in homers, and 20th in slugging. That’s not exactly championship-level production. But they’re still in first place at 47-46, a half-game up on the Mariners with the Astros breathing down their necks.
Speaking of Houston. The Rangers start a three-game series with the Astros this weekend. Langford should be good to go for all of them, barring any setbacks. The Rangers need him. They need his bat in the middle of the order. They need that walk-off energy to carry over.
A win like this could be the spark. Or it could just be one game. But right now, in this division, one game is all it takes to change everything.
