Why Milwaukee Wants to Turn a Giannis Trade Into a Three-Team Draft Jackpot

The rumor mill around Giannis Antetokounmpo has been churning all offseason, but the latest twist suggests the Milwaukee Bucks aren’t just looking to offload their superstar — they’re aiming to stockpile picks like a front office playing 4D chess.

According to NBA insider Jake Fischer, Milwaukee’s front office is quietly working the phones, angling to turn a potential Giannis deal into a draft-night haul that extends well beyond the expected return from any single trade partner. Fischer reported that the Bucks are not only eyeing the Miami Heat’s No. 13 pick as part of a package but actively seeking a third selection in the top 20 — and possibly another in the top 10.

The Heat remain the frontrunner — with a big asterisk

Miami has long been considered the leading suitor for Antetokounmpo, a narrative that only intensified ahead of the February trade deadline before Milwaukee opted to hold him for the remainder of the season. But now, with the draft looming, the Heat’s offer is taking shape.

Fischer noted that “it is widely presumed that the offer firmly on the table for Milwaukee calls for Miami to package Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, and Jaime Jaquez Jr. with prime draft capital.” That framework, however, appears to be just the starting point.

The Athletic’s Sam Amick and Eric Nehm added that Miami is “widely seen as the frontrunner,” with a deal likely to include not only Herro, Ware, and Jaquez but also as many as three first-round picks — plus either Pelle Larsson or Kasparas Jakucionis to sweeten the pot.

Why the extra picks matter

What makes Milwaukee’s draft-chasing notable is the timing. The Bucks already hold the No. 10 overall pick in this year’s draft. Adding Miami’s No. 13, plus a third top-20 selection and a potential top-10 pick, would give the front office a rare opportunity to rebuild its roster in a single night.

The strategy suggests Milwaukee isn’t interested in a slow, painful rebuild. Instead, they appear to want to flood the roster with young, cost-controlled talent — accelerated by leveraging a single superstar’s departure into multiple high-value assets.

Of course, none of this is a done deal. The team has not confirmed any of these trade talks, and the Bucks could still opt to keep Antetokounmpo if the right offer doesn’t materialize. But the fact that Milwaukee is already working behind the scenes to pad its draft capital — before a trade is even finalized — signals a front office preparing for a significant pivot.

As fans wait to see where the two-time MVP lands, one thing is clear: the Bucks aren’t just shopping Giannis. They’re trying to build a new team in the same draft room — and they want as many seats at the table as possible.
