Washington’s Draft Dilemma Ends With Dybantsa at No. 1, Peterson to Utah

The 2026 NBA Draft is basically locked in at the top. Barring something wild happening in the next 24 hours, BYU freshman AJ Dybantsa will hear his name called first by the Washington Wizards. And Kansas point guard Darryn Peterson? He’s headed to Utah at No. 2. That’s the read from the latest mock draft intel, anyway.

ClutchPoints’ Brett Siegel put out another projection this week and he’s got Dybantsa going first overall in Brooklyn. Not a shock, but the reasoning is worth chewing on.

Why Washington Isn’t Overthinking This

“Although Darryn Peterson has been given a long look by the Washington Wizards and is a prospect they truly like, the fact of the matter is that passing on Dybantsa and his pure talent on the wing would go against everything the Wizards have dreamed for over the last few seasons,” Siegel wrote.

It makes sense. Washington has been sitting on this pick for months, and Dybantsa’s size and scoring ability on the wing is exactly the kind of foundational piece teams spend years tanking to land. Peterson is great. But Dybantsa is the kind of player you don’t overthink.

Peterson Knows Where He’s Going

“It seems pretty clear at this point that Peterson knows he’s going to be the second pick, which will put him in a very favorable position with the Jazz team ready to emerge as the next youthful threats in the Western Conference,” Siegel reported.

And that’s a nice spot for him. Utah already has Keyonte George in the backcourt, plus a frontline with Lauri Markkanen and Jaren Jackson Jr. That’s an interesting mix of youth and experience. Peterson walking into that situation is a lot better than being the lone bright spot on a rebuilding roster.

Meanwhile, Dybantsa lands in D.C. with a roster that just locked up Trae Young on a long-term extension and already features Anthony Davis and Alex Sarr. That’s not a rebuild. That’s a team that thinks it can compete now.

The draft tips at 8:00 pm ET on Tuesday. These two names will come off the board first. The only real question left is whether the order actually matters or if everyone’s just been wasting oxygen debating it.
