The Atlanta Braves cleared up a little confusion Monday about Spencer Schwellenbach’s rehab schedule. And honestly, it doesn’t make manager Walt Weiss look great.

Last week, Weiss told reporters it was “hard to say” if Schwellenbach would pitch again this season. That sounded grim for a guy who hasn’t thrown a single inning in 2026 because of an elbow injury. But according to MLB.com’s Mark Bowman, the Braves now say Weiss just got it wrong.

“Walt Weiss misspoke on Friday. The Braves are now saying Spencer Schwellenbach went to Florida as planned during the All-Star break. He has just been throwing bullpens. He’ll still have to throw live BP before beginning a rehab assignment,” Bowman posted on X.

So the 25-year-old righty isn’t shut down or anything. He’s actually been progressing the whole time. The team sent him to Florida over the break to keep throwing bullpens, which is exactly what they’d mapped out. The next step is live batting practice, then a rehab assignment. That’s a pretty normal timeline for a guy recovering from elbow issues.

Weiss misspeaking about a key pitcher’s status is frustrating for fans, no doubt. But the actual news is pretty encouraging. Schwellenbach is moving forward. The Braves just need him to stay on track.

Atlanta’s pitching staff has been held together with duct tape all year

The Braves rotation has taken hit after hit. Spencer Strider is also out. Max Fried missed time. The list goes on. Somehow, Atlanta’s staff started the season hot anyway — young arms stepped up, the bullpen held, and they won games they probably shouldn’t have. But the last couple months have been a different story. The pitching has regressed hard, and the Braves are now clinging to a two-game lead over the Phillies in the NL East.

Getting Schwellenbach back would be huge. Even if he’s not ace-level right away, just having another warm body who can give quality innings would take pressure off a bullpen that’s been overworked for months.

The Braves host the Padres on Monday night. No word yet on whether Weiss will be asked to clarify anything else he might’ve said wrong. But Schwellenbach’s next bullpen session is probably the most important thing happening this week anyway.
