NBA 2K27 has a cover star, and he stands 7-foot-4. Victor Wembanyama will be the face of the standard edition when the game drops this fall. The San Antonio Spurs phenom lands on the cover after a rookie season that actually lived up to the hype, which is rare for a player with that much anticipation.
The release date is set for September 4, 2026. If you spring for one of the pricier editions, you can start playing on August 28. That seven-day early access window has become standard for the series, and 2K27 is no different.
This is the first NBA 2K game that won’t appear on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, or the original Nintendo Switch. You’ll need a PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, or a PC running Steam. That is a real generational jump. The last time the series fully left old consoles behind was NBA 2K13.
Three Editions, Three Cover Athletes
The standard edition is $69.99 and features Wembanyama. The deluxe edition costs $99.99 and puts Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark on the cover. This is the first time a WNBA player has gotten her own standalone global cover for the series. It comes with 100,000 VC, skill boosts, a Wembanyama jersey, a Caitlin Clark jersey, and some MyTEAM content including a Series 1 team selection and five pack bundle.
Then there’s the ultra edition. That one is $149.99 and available for a limited time only. Derrick Rose gets the cover on that version. It includes everything from the deluxe edition plus an extra 35,000 VC, the Season 1 Pro Pass, a Summer Season Pro Pass bundle, and a guaranteed 98 overall MyTEAM card that drops in December 2026. There is also a guaranteed Invincible MyTEAM card scheduled for May 2027. That is a long-term incentive. You are essentially paying for content that won’t fully arrive for months.
Gameplay and Modes
2K27 brings back the usual modes. MyCAREER returns with its story-driven career path where you create a player, grind through games, and explore the City for side activities. MyNBA lets you run a franchise across different eras if that is more your speed. MyGM is there for the roster nerds who just want to manage contracts and talk to fake players.
The W is back with all 12 WNBA teams. You can create a women’s player and chase a championship. MyTEAM will keep getting card drops all season. The official gameplay reveal is scheduled for July 28, and that should show off any actual mechanical changes. As of now, 2K has not detailed what feels different on the court this year.
The Story Mode Angle
MyCAREER doubles as the game’s narrative mode. There are cutscenes, conversations, and characters you meet along the way. The goal is to win championships, unlock rewards, and raise your REP in the City. It is basically the same formula 2K has been running for years. Some fans love it. Others wish they could skip the dialogue and just play basketball. But the mode keeps selling, so 2K keeps building it out.
More details should come after the gameplay reveal later this month. For now, the date is set, the cover athletes are locked, and the VC economy is ready to take your money.
