Karl Darlow is headed to Manchester United. The 35-year-old goalkeeper has officially left Leeds United after his contract expired, and he turned down the club’s offer to stay. United is bringing him in as a backup option between the posts.
Leeds confirmed the exit Tuesday and thanked Darlow for his time at Elland Road. The club specifically praised his professionalism and his work in the local community. He rejected their contract offer and chose Manchester instead.
Darlow joined Leeds ahead of the 2023/24 season. His first appearance came in a League Cup win over Shrewsbury Town. But his most meaningful stretch came the following year. He started the final seven Championship matches for Leeds, and the team won six of them. That run clinched the league title on the last day at Plymouth Argyle.
That same season he also made his international debut for Wales. His grandfather had played for the national team before him, and Darlow finally got his own chance. He debuted in a 2-1 win over Montenegro on the road. He now has 15 caps and has become Wales’ starting goalkeeper.
His Premier League contribution
Leeds bounced back to the Premier League last season. Darlow made 22 appearances and picked up April’s Save of the Month award. The highlight was a point-blank stop against Wolverhampton’s Ladislav Krejci. It was the kind of save that keeps a team in a game and reminds everyone why experience still matters.
He leaves with a total of 38 appearances for Leeds, a Championship winners medal from 2024/25, and a hand in keeping the club up last season. Not bad for a guy who was originally brought in as cover.
Now Leeds has a problem in goal. Illan Meslier already left for Arsenal. Darlow is gone. That leaves Daniel Farke with Lucas Perri and Alex Cairns as his current options. The club is expected to bring in another goalkeeper before the transfer window closes.
As for Darlow, he gets a move to one of the biggest clubs in world football. Even if he’s mostly sitting on the bench, it’s the kind of late-career move most players would sign up for.
