Ugarte’s Season Ending Surgery Puts Summer Exit on Hold

Manchester United just confirmed that Manuel Ugarte underwent successful knee surgery after tearing a ligament during Uruguay’s World Cup loss to Spain last month. The midfielder went down awkwardly while trying to make a tackle in the buildup to Spain’s winning goal, and he had to be stretchered off the field in Guadalajara.

Uruguay’s medical team evaluated him on site before he flew back to Manchester for more tests. That’s when the club broke the bad news. Ugarte called it “the most serious injury a footballer can face” but promised to “be back stronger.”

The club put out a statement saying the surgery went well and that Ugarte will start rehab now. “Ugarte will now begin the rehabilitation stage of his recovery and will be carefully managed by the club’s medical and performance staff,” the statement read. “Everyone at Manchester United wishes Manuel well for his recovery and will be supporting him every step of the way.”

What This Means for His Future at Old Trafford

Here’s the part nobody is saying out loud: Ugarte was supposed to be on his way out this summer. According to reports, the club had been lining up a transfer for the Uruguayan before he got hurt. That deal is now dead in the water.

United signed Ugarte from PSG for £50.8 million back in 2024. He never really settled. He hasn’t played since starting a home loss to Leeds on April 13, and at no point did he look like the midfield answer the club thought they were getting. The injury just made a bad situation worse.

United have been busy anyway. They already announced the signings of Andrey Santos from Chelsea and Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa. They’re still trying to bring in one more midfielder before the window closes. Ugarte’s situation is basically a non-factor in their planning now.

Rehab for this kind of knee injury usually takes months. Best case scenario, Ugarte is back training sometime next calendar year. But even then, the question is whether United will want him around or try to move him once he’s healthy again. That’s a problem for later though.

Right now, the club is focused on getting him recovered. The statement made that clear. And Ugarte, for what it’s worth, seems determined to put in the work. Whether that work leads to a future in Manchester or somewhere else remains to be seen.
