Two Key England Starters Could Miss Panama Match After Injury Scares

England’s World Cup group stage just got a little more complicated. Declan Rice and Reece James are both dealing with fitness issues ahead of the team’s final group game against Panama, according to a report from the Telegraph.

Rice couldn’t finish the full 90 minutes against Croatia in England’s opener. Then he came out of the 0-0 draw with Ghana on Tuesday with strapping wrapped around his left calf. The good news? It’s not believed to be a long-term problem. The bad news? It might be enough to keep him from starting against Panama, or at least require a late fitness test to clear him.

What’s going on with Reece James?

James played the entire match against Ghana but apparently wasn’t comfortable doing it. The report is a little light on specifics, just that the Chelsea right back felt something off during the game. He’s managed to log 90 minutes in both matches so far, but given his injury history over the years — and it’s a pretty lengthy one — it would make sense for Thomas Tuchel to be cautious.

The England manager has actually been using James in midfield during training as a potential fill-in for Rice. So the fact that both guys are banged up at the same time is far from ideal.

Why this matters for England

England is sitting on four points right now, level with Ghana. Croatia has three points and Panama is at zero. This group is tight. A slip against Panama, even a draw, could leave England vulnerable to getting knocked out depending on what happens in the other match.

Rice and James are both starters for a reason. Rice is the midfield anchor. James gives Tuchel flexibility at right back or in the middle. Losing either one would force a reshuffle. Losing both would be a real problem.

The team hasn’t confirmed anything officially yet. The Telegraph’s report is the only detail we have so far. It’s the kind of story that could be nothing by Friday — or could end up being a major talking point heading into the knockout rounds.

Panama is eliminated already, which might make them dangerous. They have nothing to lose. Teams in that spot sometimes play loose and cause problems. England needs to be sharp, and they need their best guys available.
