The Minnesota Twins just got a key piece back, and it couldn’t come at a more interesting time.
Ryan Jeffers is off the 10-day injured list and back with the big league club after a rehab assignment. The Twins made it official on social media Thursday. Jeffers had been sidelined since May 19 with a fractured hamate bone in his left hand. His last game came on May 18 in a 6-3 win over the Astros.
The timing of his return is worth watching. The trade deadline is August 3. And Jeffers has been one of the more talked-about names on the market.
He’s a 29-year-old catcher who’s hitting .295 with seven homers and 26 RBIs in just 37 games this season. That kind of production plays anywhere. Especially for a team like the Yankees, who have been linked to him for weeks now.
The Yankees connection is real
MLB.com’s Ken Rosenthal laid it out pretty clearly: speculation persists that New York will make a run at Jeffers. The right-handed hitter fits a need. The Yankees need more thump, and Jeffers has a pre-existing relationship with Yankees catching coach Tanner Swanson from their time together in the Twins organization.
Bryan Hoch of MLB.com also noted that connection earlier this month. It’s not just idle chatter. There’s a real history there.
The Rays have also been mentioned as a potential landing spot. Tampa Bay is always looking for value, and Jeffers is the kind of guy who could slide right into their lineup without a ton of fanfare.
But let’s be real. The Yankees are the team to watch here. They have the prospect capital. They have the need. And they have the personal tie with Swanson.
What the Twins might do
The Twins are sitting at 46-48, third in the AL Central. That’s not exactly a launchpad for a buyer’s mindset. But they’re not totally out of it either. The division is weak. Cleveland is in first but nobody’s running away with anything.
If Minnesota decides to sell, Jeffers is one of their best trade chips. He’s under team control for a while, he’s young enough to be attractive to contenders, and catchers who can hit are always in demand.
If they decide to hold, they’ve just gotten their starting catcher back at a time when the lineup could use the boost. Jeffers slots right back into a regular role if the Twins want to make a push.
Either way, Jeffers being activated now puts the focus right where the Twins probably don’t want it: on the trade deadline and what they plan to do about it.
The team starts a series against the Angels on Friday. Jeffers could be in the lineup as early as then.
