Trent McDuffie Just Named the NFL’s Toughest WRs to Cover. One of Them Is a Teammate.

Rams cornerback Trent McDuffie has been around. He spent four years in Kansas City, earned first-team All-Pro honors in 2023, and made the second team in 2024. So when he lists the hardest receivers to cover in the NFL, it’s worth listening.

McDuffie was asked recently — in a post on Bussin’ With the Boys — and he didn’t hesitate. He named three guys: Ja’Marr Chase, Tyreek Hill, and his new teammate Davante Adams.

That’s right. Adams, who joined the Rams this offseason, got the nod from McDuffie before they’d even played a real snap together. McDuffie knows what Adams can do from watching him across the line of scrimmage for years. And now he’s seeing it up close in training camp.

A secondary that looks different than last year

The Rams remade their defensive backfield this offseason. McDuffie is the headliner, but he’s not the only new face. Jaylen Watson starts on the other side. Quentin Lake is at nickelback. Kam Curl and Kamren Kinchens handle the safety spots.

It’s a group that already showed up early in camp. According to therams.com, Watson deflected a deep pass from Bennett that was intended for Adams, and Kinchens came down with it for a diving interception. That’s the kind of play that makes you think this secondary could be something.

Cam Lampkin — Watson’s backup — also made noise. He broke up a pass with a one-armed deflection during team drills, then followed it up with what beat reporters called an impressive interception the next day. Cameron DaSilva of The Rams Wire noted that Lampkin has shined for two straight practices now.

What this means for the Rams defense

The Rams offense is already considered one of the best in football. If the secondary can play consistently — and McDuffie thinks it can — this defense could actually keep pace. That’s not a guarantee yet. It’s August. But the early signs are there.

McDuffie’s praise for Adams also says something about the culture forming in that locker room. A new cornerback, in his first camp with the team, calling his new receiver one of the toughest covers in the league. That’s respect. That’s also the kind of thing that gets a defense fired up.

And if Lampkin keeps making plays like he has the last two days, this secondary might be deeper than anyone expected.
