Top Pick Gavin McKenna Just Gave Maple Leafs Fans Exactly What They Wanted to Hear

The Toronto Maple Leafs haven’t won a Stanley Cup since 1967. That drought weighs on everyone connected to the franchise. And now the pressure falls on an 18-year-old kid from Medicine Hat who talks like he’s ready to carry it.

Gavin McKenna went first overall to Toronto in the 2026 NHL Draft, and he didn’t waste any time setting expectations. In an interview with ESPN after the selection, McKenna was blunt about what he brings.

“I’m a player who makes all the players around me better. I’ll do whatever it takes to win a Stanley Cup,” he said.

That clip hit social media fast. SportsCenter posted it and fans ate it up. You can understand why. Toronto fans have heard a lot of promises over the years. But there was something about how McKenna said it that landed differently. No hedging. No cliches about just being happy to be here.

The Justin Bieber moment

The draft experience itself was a blur for McKenna. Pop star Justin Bieber actually joined him on stage for photos after the pick was announced. McKenna said the whole thing felt surreal.

“This isn’t what I imagined when I was a young kid,” McKenna said. “This is so much better. It’s a special moment. One I’ll remember for the rest of my life.”

It was a bright spot for a franchise coming off a rough season. Toronto missed the playoffs in 2025-26. Craig Berube got fired as head coach. Former assistant Jim Hiller stepped in. The vibe around the team needed a jolt, and landing the first pick gave them one.

What the front office thinks

General manager John Chayka didn’t hold back when talking about McKenna.

“Gavin is an exceptional young man with tremendous talent and character,” Chayka said. “Throughout this process, we had the opportunity to get to know him and his family, and each interaction strengthened our belief in him as both a player and a person.”

That kind of language from a GM matters. Teams don’t usually go this heavy on character praise unless they’re genuinely convinced. And McKenna seems to understand the market he’s walking into.

“When you go to a fanbase like that and you do well, it’s the best spot to be,” McKenna said. “It’s the greatest market out there. I’m confident in myself, and I want to do good. So hopefully the fanbase falls in love with me and it’s a good time. I’m super excited and honored to be part of this team.”

The Leafs have 13 championship banners in the rafters, but none from this century. McKenna knows that. He wasn’t alive for the last one, obviously. But he talked about ending the drought like it was the whole point of his career.

Toronto fans have seen first-round picks come and go. Some delivered. Some didn’t. McKenna seems determined to land in the first category. And for a fanbase that’s been waiting more than 50 years, that kind of confidence is exactly what they needed to hear.
