Tom Holland had a decision to make on Sunday night. Stay up until 1 a.m. to watch England face Mexico in a knockout World Cup match, or get a good night’s sleep before the biggest premiere of his life. He chose sleep. And honestly, it’s hard to blame him.
Speaking at the London premiere of Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, Holland told Deadline he didn’t watch the game live. He didn’t even know the final score until morning.
“I did not watch the football, because today is arguably one of the biggest days of my life, and I wanted to be really fresh and present, and I wanted to enjoy the day,” Holland said.
He did catch up. Holland woke up at 7 a.m., grabbed a replay of England’s 3-2 Round of 16 win over Mexico, and watched it while getting ready for press. No spoilers. He went in blind.
“I didn’t know the score, so I felt like I watched it, but I did not get up at 1 a.m.,” he said.

It’s a small moment, but it says a lot about where Holland’s head is at right now. The guy is promoting a Nolan epic, starring as Telemachus opposite Matt Damon’s Odysseus. His wife, Zendaya, plays Athena in the same film. That’s a lot of family pride wrapped up in one movie.
And that’s not all he has on his plate. Spider-Man: Brand New Day hits theaters on July 31, marking his fourth solo outing as Peter Parker. Nobody else has done that many. So yeah, he’s got a full calendar.
England’s win was big for the Three Lions. They grabbed a 3-2 victory that put them top of Group L and sent Mexico packing. But Holland had a bigger match to focus on. The kind where you show up rested or you don’t show up at all, basically.
Nolan’s The Odyssey premiered in London on Monday, July 6, and hits theaters nationwide on July 17. The cast is stacked: Anne Hathaway, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, Samantha Morton, Charlize Theron. It’s an adaptation of Homer’s epic, written and directed by Nolan. Big swing. Bigger expectations.
So Holland missed a World Cup knockout game. He caught the replay. He looked fresh on the red carpet. That’s a win in his book.
