Tigers’ Surprise Sweep of Yankees Complicates Any Tarik Skubal Trade Decision

The Detroit Tigers just did something they haven’t done since 2008. They swept the New York Yankees in the Bronx. And that little detail is making a messy trade deadline question even messier.

MLB insider Bob Nightengale pointed out the obvious on X after the sweep: the Tigers are suddenly a team that just took three straight from one of the best clubs in baseball. But here’s the thing about that series win. Detroit is still 38-49. They’re still eight games behind the Chicago White Sox in the AL Central and six games out of the final wild-card spot. A sweep doesn’t erase the math.

The real conversation hanging over this team is what to do with Tarik Skubal. The lefty has been the subject of trade rumors all season for two pretty straightforward reasons. First, the Tigers have to decide soon whether to commit to a long-term extension with him. Second, the team has been bad enough that selling high on their most valuable asset makes sense — assuming Skubal is actually at his peak value right now.

That last part gets complicated. Skubal is 4-4 with a 3.15 ERA across 11 starts. Those are strong numbers for almost any pitcher. But for someone coming off back-to-back Cy Young seasons in 2024 and 2025, the numbers represent a slight step back. He’s dealt with injuries again this year and hasn’t looked as dominant as he did during those award-winning campaigns.

So the Tigers have a tough call. If they keep winning and somehow claw back into the playoff picture, trading Skubal becomes a non-starter. A front office selling a fanbase on trading the best pitcher they’ve had in years after a series win against the Yankees? Good luck selling those season tickets next spring.

But if the Tigers stay realistic and acknowledge this roster — decimated by injuries — probably isn’t making a real run, then moving Skubal now might be the smartest baseball decision they’ll make all year. Contending teams would pay a fortune for a left-handed starter with his track record. Even a slightly less dominant Skubal is better than what most teams are running out there every fifth day.

For now, Detroit is keeping its options open. The front office hasn’t tipped its hand. And honestly, they probably don’t know what they’re going to do yet. That sweep changed the timing of the conversation if not the underlying reality. One good week in June doesn’t fix a season that started going sideways months ago. But it does make you wonder what the Tigers would look like if they started stringing a few more weeks like this one together.
