Tigers Hit a Trade Deadline Snag as Jack Flaherty Hits the IL With Forearm Issue

The Detroit Tigers just had their trade deadline calculus get a whole lot messier.

Right-hander Jack Flaherty is headed to the 15-day injured list with right flexor inflammation, the team announced Tuesday. That’s the forearm muscle group. That’s the kind of thing that tends to scare off potential trade partners. Ty Madden got called up from Triple-A to take his roster spot.

The timing here is brutal. The Tigers have two weeks until the deadline. Flaherty was one of their more obvious trade chips — a veteran starter with a track record, even if this season hasn’t gone great. He’s got a 4.59 ERA across 19 starts. Not terrible, not dominant. But a rental arm with his résumé usually fetches something solid on the market. Now teams have to wonder if he’s healthy enough to help down the stretch.

The team hasn’t said how much time Flaherty might miss. Flexor issues can be tricky. Sometimes it’s a couple weeks. Sometimes it lingers. The Tigers will update reporters as they know more, but right now the uncertainty alone kills his trade value.

This also shifts the spotlight back to Tarik Skubal. He’s the real prize in Detroit. The question hanging over everything is whether the Tigers actually deal their ace or hold onto him as a building block. Skubal is younger, cheaper, and under team control longer. He’d bring back a haul. But the Tigers haven’t shown much inclination to blow it up that completely.

Where the Tigers Stand Now

Detroit is 47-53, fourth in the AL Central. That sounds like a seller. But they’re still technically in the wild-card conversation. Not comfortably. They’re fringe. The next couple weeks will decide whether the front office buys or sells. Right now they’re kind of stuck in the middle, and losing Flaherty doesn’t make that decision any easier.

If they wanted to buy, they’d need to be closer to .500. If they wanted to sell, Flaherty was one of their best assets. Now that asset is damaged goods.

Injuries have been a theme for this team all year. It’s a big reason they’re underperforming. The rotation has taken hits. The lineup has had gaps. Flaherty going down is just another headache in a season full of them.

For now, Madden gets an opportunity. The 24-year-old righty will likely slot into the rotation or work out of the bullpen. Not the kind of move that moves the needle for a team trying to hang around in a race. But that’s where the Tigers are.
