The Real Question Nobody’s Asking About Josh Giddey’s Future in Chicago

The Chicago Bulls are sitting on the No. 4 pick in the NBA Draft, and that’s where most of the attention is right now. But there’s a quietly developing situation in the background involving Josh Giddey that might tell us more about what this front office actually wants to do.

Giddey, the 22-year-old guard who came over from Oklahoma City in the Alex Caruso trade, has drawn interest from at least two teams ahead of the draft. According to HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto, the Phoenix Suns have done background work on him. And the Minnesota Timberwolves are reportedly in the mix too.

Darren Wolfson of KSTP said on X that Giddey is a name the Wolves have looked at, though he added a pretty big caveat: it’s not clear how you actually get him out of Chicago. Wolfson also noted he likes Giddey’s fit with new Timberwolves assistant coach Tiago Splitter.

But Does Giddey Fit What Chicago Wants Now?

That’s the real tension here. New executive vice president of basketball operations Bryson Graham held a press conference and talked about wanting guys who play hard on both ends, have athletic length, and fit a certain profile. And if you look at the current roster, there aren’t many players who check those boxes outside of maybe Noah Essengue and Matas Buzelis.

Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints put it bluntly on Clutch Scoops: Graham’s comments raise major questions about where Giddey fits in this organization’s long-term plans. Because Giddey is a floor general who can pass like few others but struggles defensively and doesn’t space the floor the way modern guards are expected to.

So you have this situation where two teams want him, but the Bulls haven’t given any indication they’re shopping him. Which might mean they still see him as part of the future. Or it might mean they’re waiting for the right offer. Or it might mean they’re not sure yet themselves.

What makes this interesting is the timing. The Bulls have the No. 4 pick in a draft that’s deep with guards. If they take someone like Reed Sheppard or Stephon Castle, does that change how they view Giddey? Probably. If they go in a different direction, maybe not.

For Minnesota, the logic is pretty clear. They need a point guard who can run an offense and let Anthony Edwards play more off the ball. Giddey’s size and vision would fit that. For Phoenix, it’s less obvious. They have Devin Booker and Bradley Beal, so adding another guard who can’t shoot consistently feels like a weird fit unless they’re planning something bigger.

None of this is happening tomorrow. The draft is still a couple weeks out and trade talks tend to heat up when teams actually get on the clock. But this is one to watch because how the Bulls handle Giddey will tell us a lot about how serious they are about this supposed identity shift under Graham.
