The MLB trade deadline is almost here, and the Tarik Skubal rumor mill just took a weird turn. Everyone figured it was a two-team race between the Dodgers and Yankees, maybe the Braves if they got aggressive. But now the Phillies have entered the picture, and that changes things.

According to MLB insider Jon Morosi, Philadelphia sent scouts to watch Skubal’s last start. That alone isn’t earth-shattering — plenty of teams scout elite arms. What makes this interesting is the timing. The Phillies have lost six of their last seven games. They’re not exactly surging into the deadline with momentum.

Morosi also pointed out something worth noting: Detroit Tigers president Scott Harris has traded three pitchers to the Phillies since taking over — Gregory Soto, Michael Lorenzen, and Matt Manning. There’s history there. If Harris and Phillies GM Dave Dombrowski are comfortable doing business together, maybe this isn’t as random as it looks.

Why Philadelphia Makes No Sense (and Some Sense)

The Phillies’ starting rotation isn’t the problem. They rank 11th in starter ERA, which is solid. Aaron Nola is having a rough year — 3-9 with a 5.61 ERA — but the rest of the group has been fine. Zack Wheeler, Ranger Suárez, and Cristopher Sánchez are all capable arms.

The real issue is the bullpen. Philadelphia ranks 22nd in bullpen ERA. That’s a glaring weakness for a team with World Series ambitions. Most experts assumed the Phillies would target relievers, not a frontline starter who would cost a ton of prospects.

But here’s the thing: Skubal isn’t just any starter. He’s a two-time All-Star who leads the AL in strikeouts and owns a 2.34 ERA this season. If you can get a guy like that, you figure out the rest later. The Phillies could always move another starter to bolster the bullpen if they land Skubal.

The Tigers Hold the Cards

All of this is hypothetical until Detroit decides what it wants to do. The Tigers are 51-57, sitting fourth in the AL Central, but only five games back of the White Sox. That’s not a huge gap. If they think they can make a run, they might just keep Skubal and ride out the season.

Detroit has been notoriously stingy with its aces. They didn’t deal Justin Verlander until it was absolutely necessary. They held onto Max Scherzer until the bitter end. The Tigers don’t panic. And Skubal is under team control through 2026, so there’s no urgency to move him now unless someone blows them away with an offer.

So yeah, the Phillies are in the conversation. Whether they actually pull the trigger depends on whether Detroit even picks up the phone. If the Tigers hang on to Skubal, all this chatter about Philadelphia — and every other team — is just noise.
