The employee who scheduled the press conference had vacation planned for that week. According to sources, they were just trying to get ahead of the workload in case James did choose the Heat. They set up the July 27 stream early as a precaution. Then it accidentally went live. No conspiracy. No insider leak. Just a staffer trying not to work on their days off.
Rich Paul, James’ agent, reportedly found the whole thing funny. Shelburne wrote that Paul and the small group of people James confided in during his decision process were amused by the saga. Which makes sense. If you’re LeBron James, a rogue YouTube event from a team you didn’t pick is barely a blip.
The bigger question nobody asked
A league source close to the process put it bluntly to ESPN: Did anyone really think LeBron was doing a press conference? The guy doesn’t do those. Some fans spotted a LinkedIn job posting for Miami’s YouTube pages shortly after the mistake went public and assumed the employee got fired. But that posting had been live since the start of July. The team has not confirmed any personnel changes related to the incident.
Why LeBron didn’t go back
James explained through Rich Paul that he didn’t return to Miami or Cleveland because he didn’t want to erase the legacy he built with those franchises. The idea being that coming back later in his career could complicate how fans remember those earlier runs. He went to Philadelphia instead, joining a young core that gives him a different kind of shot at competing.
