The Cardinals Need Pitching. Reid Detmers Makes More Sense Than You Think.

The St. Louis Cardinals weren’t supposed to be here. Not really. They entered 2026 in a soft rebuild, the kind where you don’t say the word out loud but everyone knows the deal. And yet here they are, 43-38, hanging around the NL Wild Card picture and not embarrassing themselves in the Central division race. The problem? Their pitching staff is 19th in ERA and dead last in a category that actually matters: strikeouts. They’re 28th in MLB in that department. That’s not just bad. That’s hard to watch.

So who do you add when you’re a contender who doesn’t want to act like one? You don’t trade your top prospects for a rental. You don’t chase a superstar like Tarik Skubal or Joe Ryan unless the price drops. You find someone who fits your timeline and your budget. Which brings us to Reid Detmers.

The Angels never do what you expect

Detmers is the kind of arm that makes you wonder what the Angels are even doing. He’s 26 years old, under contract through 2028, and sitting tied for eighth in all of baseball with 112 strikeouts. He has swing-and-miss stuff, which is exactly what St. Louis doesn’t have. But the Angels are the Angels. They’re one of the worst teams in the league this year and there’s no guarantee they’ll sell at the deadline. They never do what makes sense.

That might change though. They fired general manager Perry Minasian recently, which could shift how the front office approaches the trade deadline. A new decision-maker might be more willing to start over. Or less. Nobody really knows yet. But if the Angels do decide to move pieces, Detmers is the guy who makes the most sense for a team like St. Louis.

A fit that works right now and later

Here’s the thing about Detmers. He’s not just a rental. You get him for this season, next season, and two more after that. The Cardinals have a rotation that needs help in the short term but they’re also thinking about 2027 and 2028. Detmers slots in behind Sonny Gray or wherever they need him. He gives them a lefty with swing-and-miss ability and years of control. That’s rare.

The Cardinals probably won’t gut their farm system to make a run this year. That’s not who they are. But bringing in a starter like Detmers doesn’t require that kind of overpay. It’s a move that says we’re competing now and we’re not stupid about it. The front office has to at least consider it.

And sure, maybe they don’t pull the trigger. Maybe the Angels hold onto Detmers and try to build around him. But if St. Louis wants to make noise this October and not just show up, they need somebody who can miss bats. Detmers can do that. And right now, nobody’s really talking about it.
