The Braves’ Pitching Crisis Could Push Detroit Into an Unlikely Skubal Decision

Jon Morosi might as well have drawn a red circle around the Atlanta Braves’ roster depth chart. The MLB Network reporter posted a cryptic message to X over the weekend that reads less like a rumor and more like a roadmap — one that points directly toward Tarik Skubal leaving Detroit.

His post did the math: the Tigers’ postseason odds have cratered to 2.4 percent, according to Baseball Reference. Then he listed every team president Scott Harris has traded with since arriving in Detroit — the Dodgers, Phillies, Giants, Rangers, and yes, the Braves. The kicker? Atlanta currently has multiple starters on the injured list.

The implication isn’t subtle. The Braves need arms. The Tigers need to decide if they’re sellers. And Morosi, who has a track record of connecting dots before they become headlines, is hinting that the fit may be closer than fans realize.

The All-Star Break Is Detroit’s Deadline — But Not for Winning

Bob Nightengale of USA Today reported Sunday that the Tigers plan to wait until around the All-Star break to evaluate their postseason viability. If the math doesn’t change by then — and it’s hard to see how it does with a 29-42 record and a fourth-place spot in the AL Central — Harris will almost certainly field offers.

Skubal made his return from an elbow injury Saturday, starting against Cleveland and lasting just four-plus innings in a loss. His presence on the mound immediately reignited chatter about his trade value. Before the injury, he was one of the most electric left-handed arms in the game. Even with the health questions, teams are lining up.

The Philadelphia Phillies, San Diego Padres, and Tampa Bay Rays have all been linked to Skubal in recent weeks, according to multiple reports. But the Braves’ combination of urgent need and front-office history with Harris might give them an edge.

Harris knows Atlanta’s organization from his time as assistant general manager with the Cubs and later as San Francisco’s GM. He’s dealt with Braves president Alex Anthopoulos before. If the Tigers do pivot to sell mode, the relationship is already warm.

What Would a Deal Look Like?

Skubal is under team control through 2026, which makes him more than a rental. That’s why Detroit can afford to wait. The price will be steep — likely multiple top-100 prospects or a package centered around an MLB-ready bat. Atlanta’s farm system is thinner than it was during the rebuild years, but the Braves still have pieces that could intrigue Harris.

For now, the Tigers are publicly saying nothing. The front office hasn’t confirmed any talks. But the silence is loud. And with Morosi dropping breadcrumbs, the speculation around Skubal isn’t dying down — it’s sharpening into a very real possibility.
