The Braves Have a Real Path to Landing Tarik Skubal. Here’s Why It Works.

The Tarik Skubal trade chatter is picking up steam, and most of the attention is going to the usual suspects. The Dodgers have the prospect capital. The Yankees have the need and the payroll. But there is a third team that might actually make more sense for both sides, and it is not getting enough play.

That team is the Atlanta Braves.

MLB insider Mark Feinsand recently listed Atlanta alongside Los Angeles and New York as the top three landing spots for the Detroit Tigers ace. And while the Dodgers and Yankees are the flashier names, the Braves match up with Detroit in a way the others don’t. Not just because of what they have, but because of what the Tigers actually need.

What the Tigers Would Want in a Skubal Trade

Detroit is reportedly still in the Wild Card race, but at 30-44 and 6.5 games back, that feels more like a technicality than a real plan. The Tigers made the playoffs the last two years, sure, but they are not built to contend right now. They need young pitching depth. Badly. And according to Feinsand, Skubal would be the biggest difference-maker on the market if he gets moved.

The Tigers already have some promising position players in the pipeline — Kevin McGonigle looks like a long-term infield piece, and Max Clark is the No. 7 overall prospect. What they lack is elite arm talent in the farm system. That is where Atlanta comes in.

The Braves only have two top-100 prospects, both pitchers. But those two — ranked inside the top 60 — are better than anything the Yankees can offer on the mound. And unlike the Dodgers, who have five top-100 outfield prospects but not much variety, Atlanta can give Detroit exactly what its system lacks.

The Braves Can Offer More Than Prospects

Here is where it gets interesting. Atlanta does not have to stop at prospects. The front office could also include MLB-ready arms. Spencer Strider has been banged up the last couple years, but when he is healthy, he is still a frontline starter. Didier Fuentes is a fast-riser in the Braves bullpen who projects as a rotation piece down the line. Throwing one or both into a deal gives Detroit immediate help for 2027 without punting on the future.

The Tigers could also ask for a position player or two to balance out the return. That would make the package hard to beat. For Atlanta, it would hurt. But the Dodgers and Yankees have to ask themselves whether they want to part with their top prospects for a rental — Skubal is under team control through 2026 — and whether trading within their own league makes sense. The Yankees, in particular, would have to deal with Skubal in the same league for at least two years.

None of this means Skubal is heading to Atlanta. The Dodgers still have the deepest prospect pool in baseball. But the Braves have the right mix of high-end young arms and controllable major league talent to put together a deal that makes Detroit better right now. That is something L.A. and New York cannot say as cleanly.

So do not sleep on Atlanta. They are lurking. And if the Tigers decide to move Skubal, the Braves might be the team that actually makes the call that gets it done.
