Texas Southern is officially leaving Shell Energy Stadium behind. The school’s Board of Regents approved the 2026 football schedule this week, ending weeks of speculation about where the Tigers would actually play home games. They won’t be at the venue that’s been their home base since 2012.
Instead, five of six home contests will happen at W.W. Thorne Stadium, a renovated high school facility about 15 miles north of campus in Aldine. The one exception is the big one: homecoming against Southern on Oct. 24 will be played at NRG Stadium. That’s a switch that matters for a program trying to build momentum.
Why the change matters
Shell Energy Stadium is a soccer-specific venue just east of downtown Houston. It’s close to campus, maybe three miles from Texas Southern’s Third Ward location. Students and alumni could basically walk or take a short bus ride. W.W. Thorne is a different story. It seats about 10,000 people after renovations and sits in Aldine ISD territory. Depending on traffic, getting there from campus takes 25 to 35 minutes. That’s a real shift in convenience.
The move is temporary though. Last week, university officials unveiled plans for a brand new on-campus football stadium that would hold up to 10,000 fans. That would give Texas Southern a permanent home on its own property for the first time in decades. Alumni and supporters have been buzzing about it.
Schedule release comes after a strong 2025
Texas Southern surprised a lot of people last season. They finished 6-5 overall and 5-3 in SWAC play. That’s a big jump from where the program has been. The Tigers had some rough years, so that record felt like a validation that the direction is changing. Now they have to sustain it while getting used to a new home-field setup.
The 2026 schedule includes six home games total, with the November SWAC championship game still TBD. The conference slate is tough. Alabama State and Jackson State both look strong. But the Tigers have some momentum and a coaching staff that has openly talked about competing for a title.
Here’s the full schedule as released by the school:
Sept. 5 — at Texas A&M-Commerce
Sept. 12 — vs. Prairie View A&M (at W.W. Thorne)
Sept. 19 — at Alcorn State
Sept. 26 — vs. Alabama State (at W.W. Thorne)
Oct. 3 — vs. Jackson State (at W.W. Thorne)
Oct. 10 — at Bethune-Cookman
Oct. 17 — vs. Grambling State (at W.W. Thorne)
Oct. 24 — vs. Southern (homecoming at NRG Stadium)
Nov. 7 — vs. Mississippi Valley State (at W.W. Thorne)
Nov. 14 — at Arkansas-Pine Bluff
Nov. 21 — SWAC Championship (if eligible)
The Tigers open the season on the road against Texas A&M-Commerce on Sept. 5. Their first home game is the Battle of the Bayou Classic rematch against Prairie View A&M on Sept. 12. The SWAC schedule is brutal but there’s no reason to think Texas Southern can’t hang with anyone in the conference after last year.
The on-campus stadium plan is still in early stages. No timeline has been announced for construction. But the approval of that project alongside this schedule release tells you the administration is serious about making this program a long-term contender. For now though, the Tigers will be playing ball in a high school stadium and the Houston Texans’ home field once. That’s the reality for 2026.
